NFL Pro Bowl Rosters: Green Bay Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Snubbed
The NFL Pro Bowl Rosters were released this week and the biggest snub is undoubtedly Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The quarterback roster spots for the NFC went to starter Michael Vick and backups Matt Ryan and Drew Brees.
It is hard to argue against Vick as the starter. Vick has single-handedly willed the Eagles to victory at times this season. His play has led some to push his name as a possible MVP candidate, although he has little chance against presumed favorite Tom Brady.
On the other hand, there is little question that Rodgers deserved the nod over backups Drew Brees and Matt Ryan.
Rodgers is ranked third in quarterback rating in the NFL this season at 101.9. His rating is higher than Vick's (fourth), Brees (10th) and Ryan (15th). Overall, Rodgers' numbers have been far superior than Brees's and particularly Ryan's.
Despite missing nearly two full games this year, Rodgers has passed for 3,693 yards on the season. Compare that to just 3,469 passing yards for Matt Ryan who has played in all of Atlanta's games and has attempted 92 more passes. Consequently, Rodgers' yards per attempt average, second in the NFL, is more than a yard higher than that of either Ryan or Brees.
Rodgers also has an impressive touchdown to interception ratio. Rodgers has passed for 27 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. The same cannot be said for Drew Brees, who is second in the NFL with a career high 21 interceptions.
As evidenced by the choice of Vick as the starter, rushing ability and movement outside of the pocket deserves some credit in the choice. Unlike Brees or Ryan, Rodgers adds the mobile capability to his abilities as a pocket passer.
Rodgers has rushed for 335 yards this season and five touchdowns. In fact, Rodgers has been even more impressive considering the fact that the Packers have been without Ryan Grant for most of the season and have a rushing attack in the bottom third of the league.
Rodgers was evidently the biggest snub of this year's Pro Bowl picks. Perhaps the case can be made for Drew Brees, although his lofty interceptions total must be considered. On the other hand, Aaron Rodgers has been simply better than Matt Ryan this season.
Give credit to Ryan for leading his team to the better record. It shouldn't matter when it comes to picking Pro Bowl rosters. Rodgers is the better quarterback and had the better season. Sadly, the best players do not always get the credit they deserve.
