All Aboard the Sportscoaster!

Dan SteinSep 8, 2008

Sports have always been popular in America.  From the early days of Major League Baseball, College Football, NFL, Horse Racing, and Boxing in the 1920's, to the rise of the NBA in the 1950's and 1960's, sports has been a constant outlet for Americans to leave their daily lives behind and experience the emotional roller coaster that occurs within virtually ever sporting event.

Just within this past week fans from many cities across the country went up and down the emotionally charged ladder that all fans must climb.

In Boston, fans hit a new low early Sunday afternoon with the loss of their "Golden Boy" Tom Brady.  Seemingly seeing their Super Bowl hopes washed away, those fans were able to turn to their beloved Red Sox pulled within a half game of the Tampa Rays the following evening with a 3-0 shutout.

In Pennsylvania, fans saw their pre-season hyped Pitt Panthers upset by Bowling Green one weekend to deflate that hopeful balloon, but were served to perhaps the most dominant performances of the opening NFL weekend by the Eagles in their blowout win over the hapless Rams and the Steelers complete domination of the Houston Texans.

In Arizona, fans were crying in their Arnold Palmer's while watching the Diamondbacks get swept by the Dodgers; losing their first place lead in the NL West.  A day later those same fans were able to watch the Arizona Cardinals begin what could finally be that long awaited breakthrough season with a win over the 49ers.

And perhaps no fan base has been treated the full loop-de-loop nature of sports than right here in Wisconsin.  Wisconsinites have watched this past week as the Milwaukee Brewers have begun yet another September swoon that could cost them their first post-season birth in 26 years(the longest playoff draught in pro sports).

On Sunday these same fans were treated to Brett Favre's coming out party with the Jets.  I, for one, felt a mix of joy, pain, and awe watching Mr. Favre unleash a 56-yard laser touchdown pass to Jericho Cotchery in the opening quarter.

But after Wisconsin fans took the first drop of what is to be a season long roller coaster, the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers provided the lift those fans needed with a huge win over the hated Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football.  As you can see, from coast to coast, sports fans can share in the same up and down emotional experience that sports provides.  Enjoy the ride!
