Dallas Cowboys 2010 Year in Review: Top 15 Moments
The Dallas Cowboys are like an enigma wrapped in a riddle trapped inside of a bad Jerry Seinfeld joke. They ended the 2009 season with a blowout loss to the Minnesota Vikings and fans and pundits alike pegged them as early 2010 Super Bowl favorites because of the possibilities. Go figure huh?
There is quarterback Tony Romo, running back Felix Jones, wide receivers Miles Austin and now Dez Bryant, and then there are the Pro Bowlers on defense. This team on paper may just be better than the early 90’s Cowboys teams’ right? RIGHT!?
Well 16 games into the 2010 season and we can clearly see that my above statement is nowhere near true.
Labeling this team a pack of underachievers is probably an insult to the word underachieve.
Romo was injured but the Cowboys were terrible before that happened. The defense was lackluster but we saw that against Minnesota earlier this year and head coach was fired.
What a great way to start and end the year, eh? Since we never like to end the year on a bad note lets take a look at the top 15 moments for YOUR Dallas Cowboys in 2010.
Drafting Dez Bryant
1 of 15
This has got to be the most positive moment of Jerry’s year. I yelled from the mountaintops for the Cowboys to draft an offensive lineman but Jerry chose to roll with Bryant.
Our offensive line is a different story but Bryant was nothing short of explosive when he stepped onto the field.
The Firing of Wade Phillips
2 of 15
Jerry Jones should have never hired Wade Phillips. Cowboys fans never really warmed up to the lovable Phillips as he could never take them to the next level. The team responded to him early because of his laid back style but that soon wore off when the Cowboys needed to toughen up.
The result was a team who stopped responding to Phillips in 2010 and Jerry finally giving Bum’s son the can.
Naming Jason Garrett Interim Head Coach
3 of 15
Call me crazy but I was not alone in thinking that Garrett was simply an extension of the problems in Big D. There were calls for Jerry to rid the team of Garrett as soon as he let Wade go but he didn’t.
Garrett has been a nice surprise as he has lead the Cowboys to a 4-3 record since he was tapped to lead a seven lose ball club who was headed nowhere. Not sure if Garrett will be back in 2010 but he has definitely shown that he has what it takes to become a head coach in the National Football League.
Losing 34-3 to the Minnesota Vikings
4 of 15
What a way to end the 2010 season man. A ton of momentum swept them up to Minnesota and Brett Favre and the Vikes promptly smacked them down. The offensive line was injured and Romo was almost murdered because of that and their inability to protect him.
The standout moment for me will always be Gerald Sensabaugh looking lost against Sidney Rice after he and Favre connected on a 47 yard touchdown. That should have been our sign that 2010 would not go well for the ‘Boys.
Tony Romo Breaks His Collar Bone
5 of 15
Tony Romo is the most criticized quarterback in the league. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Romo receives criticism for the way he wears his hat, no really, he does, to the time of the year he chooses to golf. Last season Tony threw only nine interceptions last season and he was still told that he could have done more.
This year he was crushed after rookie fullback Chris Gronkowski missed a key block and that ended Romo’s 2010. All the better I guess, Tony’s season wasn’t going that great anyway.
Dallas Wins Their First Playoff Game Since 1996
6 of 15
It’s been a long time coming for the ‘Boys from Valley Ranch but they finally did it. They beat Donovan McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles 34-14 in the wild card round of the playoffs as Felix Jones torched the Eagles for 148 yards. This game is why so many thought the Cowboys were ready for the big time.
Then there was the game against the Vikings and the start of the 2010 season that washed everyone’s hopes away.
Cowboys Release Offensive Lineman Flozell Adams
7 of 15
Adams was the anchor of the Cowboys offensive line forever it seemed. He was big, strong, and nasty and nobody on the other side of the line could handle him.
But once Adams lost a step it was all over for him.
False starts and personal foul penalties pretty much signed his death certificate as a Cowboy. This summer Adams was let go and picked up by the Pittsburg Steelers.
Cowboys Are Named NFL Cash King
8 of 15
May not seem like huge news but don’t tell that to Jerry Jones.
For the last four years the Cowboys have topped Forbes magazine list of the NFL’s most profitable franchises. Jerry spent over $1 billion dollars to build his “Jerry World” and best believe he wants to earn his money back. The Dallas Cowboys are worth $1.8 billion dollars. That’s billion son, not million!
Cowboys Start the 2010 Season 1-7
9 of 15
Let’s run it down kids, the ‘Boys took L’s against the Redskins, Bears, Titans, Vikings, Giants, Jaguars, and Packers. These cats had one win against the Houston Texans in Week Three and it was pretty much downhill from there.
I guess the ironic part about all of this is that Tony Romo was the leading passer in every single game the Cowboys played up until his injury and he was blamed for just about all of the ‘Boys problems.
The Demise of Marion the Barbarian
10 of 15
Not literally of course, but Marion has had a tough season. This is only his sixth year in the league, but the 25 yard touchdown he broke against Arizona last week was his longest touchdown-run since 2007. He only has 371 rushing yards, his attempts are down, and he’s averaging a very average 3.4 yards per carry.
I think his days in Dallas are just about over but that ride was fun while it lasted wasn’t it?
David Buehler…Buehler…Buehler
11 of 15
The Cowboys kicking game is just plain nasty and not in a good way.
Buehler has one of the strongest legs in the league but his accuracy is about as good as Mr. Magoo after four or five beers. He missed an extra point against Arizona, which aided the Cowboys in losing, and he’s only making 77 percent of his kicks. I believe its time to cut bait.
Miles Austin Signs $54 Million Dollar Extension
12 of 15
Take a look at Austin’s stats this year: 67 receptions for 979 yards and seven touchdowns. Last year he had 81 grabs, 1,320 yards, and 11 touchdowns.
Now I’ll grant you this, Austin lost Romo early and the team hasn’t played well this season. But Austin had three drops against the Cardinals and a slip on the field that led to an interception and a touchdown by Arizona.
Should the Cowboys have waited? Hmm, guess we’ll soon find out.
The emergence of Jon Kitna
13 of 15
Kitna was either going to sink or swim as the starter and not only has he swam, he’s doing tricks while doing so. J
on has surprised almost everybody with his play and at 38 years old he’s playing better football than another old gray-haired quarterback in the league.
John Phillips Tears His ACL
14 of 15
Phillips was pushing hard for the back-up tight end spot that is currently held by Martellus Bennett before he tore his knee up. Against the Bengals in the NFL’s annual preseason Hall of Fame Game Phillips attempted to release from a defender into a pass route and his knee just gave out.
Season over for him and Bennett could breathe a little easier.
Alex Barron Against the Washington Redskins
15 of 15
I mean, really? Barron was just plain bad against the Redskins.
On the last play of the game versus Washington Barron hooked ‘Skins defender Brian Orakpo and wrestled him to the ground after he was beat off the line. Romo threw a game winning touchdown to wide receiver Roy Williams but it was called back after Barron was flagged for holding.
Sometimes we see the signs but we just don’t pay attention. This play was the Cowboys season in a nutshell.
