Philadelphia Eagles Vs. Minnesota Vikings: Five Things To Keep In Mind
The NFL's Tuesday game, the first since 1946, is set to kick off at 8 p.m tonight as the Minnesota Vikings visit the Philadelphia Eagles.
Thanks to the snow, the game that was scheduled for Sunday night will be played tonight, proving once and for all that it is not always sunny in Philadelphia.
NFL addicts everywhere will be watching with bated breath as their favorite game gets an extra day of national attention and spreads to reach most of the week, spanning Thursday to Tuesday this past week.
Along with the game comes a rash of sub-plots, involving everything from the end of a career to this season's MVP race.
The Eagles are playing as hot as any other team in the NFL right now, while the Vikings are pretty much a sinking ship, losers of six of their past nine games.
It should be an exciting game nonetheless, as it promises to be a bone-chilling night, something that can cause an unpredictable game of football, and what more could we ask for on a Tuesday night?
So, here we have five things to keep in mind as your anticipation grows for the first Tuesday night game in over half a century creeps up on us tonight.
First Tuesday Game Since 1946
1 of 5
With an excellent ability for "Googling" and a keen mind, I have learned that the last Tuesday game played in the NFL was 66 years ago in 1946.
The New York Giants visited the Boston Yanks (kind of sounds dirty to say those two together, like the Boston Lakers or Los Angeles Celtics), and the Giants won the game, 17-0.
It remains to be seen whether or not this is an actual meaningful sub-plot to the game and whether it will effect the outcome, as there have been no other examples in more than a half a century, but it is still something neat to keep in mind.
This happened so long ago that the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" had yet to be released and a single NBA game had yet to be played, and it was the day that 12 high-ranking German officials were sentenced to death for their war crimes, so there's that.
Brett Favre's Career Over?
2 of 5
Brett Favre took a nasty spill last week as he inexplicably came back to start a game after his consecutive games started streak ended, and he ended up concussed.
This week he is listed as doubtful on the Minnesota Vikings injury report, and it seems as if Joe Webb will get the start in his stead.
It seems to me that if Webb ends up trotting out for the first snaps in Tuesday night's game, then we have seen the last of Favre.
There is almost no possibility that he would come in halfway through the game and if he doesn't play this week, it's hard to see him playing in the final week of the season, unless he wants a final farewell.
I am 100 percent certain that he is going to be finished after this season, which means I have no clue if he will come back or not, considering his past.
Nonetheless, we still may have seen the final game in the long career of Brett Favre a week ago.
Eagles After The Comeback
3 of 5
One thing that will be interesting to see is how the Eagles come out of the gate after staging one of the biggest comebacks in the history of the NFL last week against the Giants.
Philadelphia could come out just as hot as they finished last week, or they could end up starting the game with a big game hangover and dig themselves into a hole early.
Who knows, it's possible that it has no effect on this game altogether and I'm making something out of nothing.
Either way, there is no way that they have forgotten what an amazing thing they did last week, and there could be ramifications for it this week.
Michael Vick and The MVP Race
4 of 5
Tom Brady didn't really have a down week this week against the Buffalo Bills, but it kind of looked that way.
Instead of his usual 340 yards, he ended up with only 140, but he still threw for three touchdowns and no interceptions along the way to leading his team to a 34-3 rout of the Bills.
Regardless, it still leaves a tiny, tiny hole open for a challenger to snake away an award that almost seems like a sure thing at this point.
One such guy that could possibly grab it away from Brady is Michael Vick, who has had an interception-less streak that was almost as equally as impressive as Brady's and is enjoying a career year.
He is a comeback story, which could win him some votes, and he has completely reinvented his game, using hard work and dedication to become a complete passer while maintaining his ability to run the ball, making him the most exciting player in football.
If Vick wants to keep any hopes at an MVP alive, he has to have two monster games to round out the season and hope Brady has an off-game next week, if he does end up playing.
The Eagles Want That Bye
5 of 5
It's as plain and simple as this: if Philadelphia wins their last two games, they get the second first-round bye in the NFC, otherwise things get complicated and they are fighting with the Bears for that spot.
They also have the possibility of grabbing home-field advantage and the No. 1 seed away from the Atlanta Falcons if they were to slip up again next week.
The Eagles aren't exactly playing a meaningless game here, folks.
The best way they can hope to get either the No. 2 or No. 1 seed in the playoffs and avoid playing in the wild-card round is to win this week and next week, so the better start with the first step this week.
