Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Advice: Who To Pick Up in Week 17

Bruno Boys Fantasy FootballDec 27, 2010

If you’re looking for an edge in refining your roster for a playoff run take a look at our Week 17 "Waiver Wire Pick Them Ups”  list for recommendations at each position.

Shaun Hill (Detroit Lions)

Hill (finger) returned to the starting lineup in Week 16 against the Miami Dolphins and went 14-for-26 for 222 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.

He has put up at least 13 fantasy points in seven of the eight games he has started and finishes this season heading into Week 17 against the Minnesota Vikings. Of course, the one outlier came back in Week 4 against the Vikings, as Hill passed for 237 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the game.

That said, the Vikings were playing much better defensively back then and will have nothing to play for in their regular season finale. Minnesota has allowed at least 10 fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in eight of their last 10 games, allowing multiple passing touchdowns on five occasions in that span.

If you need a plug-in for your regular signal caller who could be rested in Week 17, Hill is worth consideration.

Mike Thomas (Jacksonville Jaguars)

Thomas had six catches for 96 yards and a touchdown against the Washington Redskins in Week 16. In comparison, Jacksonville's No. 1 receiver, Mike Sims-Walker (ankle) had just one catch in the game.

Thomas now has nine catches for 159 yards over the past two games and gets a nice matchup in Week 17 against the Houston Texans

Houston entered Week 16 allowing the second-most fantasy points (25.4 per game) to opposing wide receivers.  Back in Week 10 against the Texans, Thomas had eight receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown. He could see similar success this coming week.

Fantasy owners should definitely consider adding Thomas if one of their regular wide receivers might get rested in Week 17.  He is currently available in over half of Yahoo! leagues.

Jacoby Jones (Houston Texans)

Jones had five catches for 115 yards against the Denver Broncos in Week 16. In the game, he saw increased action with Andre Johnson (ankle) inactive.

Jones now has 17 catches over the last three games and could continue that success in Week 17 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars entered Week 16 allowing 23.4 fantasy points per game to opposing wide receiver (fourth-most in the league), and they allowed 18 receptions for 268 yards and two touchdowns to the Texans’ wide receivers back in Week 10.

If Johnson is held out again since Houston has nothing to play for in the regular season finale, expect Jones to see a fairly significant share of targets and be productive.  Fantasy owners who have relied on Johnson all season may want to add Jones if he is available no matter what.

Jared Cook (Tennessee Titans)

Cook had five catches (on nine targets) for 96 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 16. He now has eight catches over the last two weeks as he appears to be emerging as the Titans’ top tight end.

Week 17 brings a favorable looking matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, which have allowed at least eight catches to opposing tight ends in three of their last four games and five touchdowns to the position over that span.

Titans’ tight end Bo Scaife caught two touchdowns against the Colts back in Week 14, and the team’s tight ends caught three touchdowns from quarterback Kerry Collins in the game.

Given the sheer number of tight ends Tennessee has on their roster, Cook makes for a fairly risky addition, but he definitely is superior in talent to the other available options the team has.
