Kansas City Chiefs 2010 Year in Review: Top 10 Moments

Bill RobbinsDec 27, 2010

As the year 2010 winds down to its final days, it time to reflect on the year that was for the Kansas City Chiefs.

For Chiefs fans, there were many things to get excited about, such as an exciting rookie draft class, the addition of two Super-Bowl winning coordinators and a QB to receiver connection that was one of the best in the NFL this season.

Many changes happened at 1 Arrowhead Drive this year and now its time to reminisce on what exactly went down as the year comes to a crashing end.

10. Eric Berry Interception Return For TD vs. Tennessee

1 of 10

This play will go down as arguably the best defensive play turned in by the Chiefs so far in the '10 season.

Berry reads Titans QB Kerry Collins eyes as he picks it, and then breaks about four would-be Titans tackles and leaps into the end-zone is one of the most exciting Chiefs plays of the year.

The interception/touchdown also helped seal the game and essentially the AFC West as it put KC up 31-7 at the half and the Chiefs never looked back from there, on there way to a 34-14 win.

9. Cassel To Bowe: 75-Yard Touchdown vs. Tennessee

2 of 10

I had to add this play to the list of top moments just because it was beautiful all the way around.

Matt Cassel steps into his throw and hits a cross Dwayne Bowe right in stride and around four Titans defenders, makes the grab and outruns all of them to pay dirt.

At the time, it was a huge play in the game because the Titans had just scored and were trying to seize some momentum as the Chiefs had third and long on this play.

This play and moment illustrates just how far that Cassel and Bowe have come as a QB/WR duo in this league.

8. Ryan Succop's Game Winning FG vs. Buffalo

3 of 10

In one of the most dramatic moments of the year for the Chiefs, they were able to hold off a feisty Buffalo Bills team in week eight of the '10 season.

It took a 35-yard field goal from kicker Ryan Succop to do the trick, but as time expired in overtime, the Chiefs had more points on the board.

It was one of those games that came down to the final play, literally, and will be remembered as one of the most exciting and thrilling moments for the Chiefs of not only 2010 but in Succop's career as well.

7. Tony Moeaki's One-Handed Catch Vs. San Francisco

4 of 10

In one of the best catches of the '10 NFL season, Chiefs rookie Tony Moeaki turns in this one-handed masterpiece against the 49ers back in September.

He jumps up and reaches his right arm out and grabs it with one hand and lands down in the very back of the end-zone as his defender Navarro Bowman just watches in disbelief.

It was one of those moments where you just say wow and stand amazed at a play that few are likely to ever see again by a tight end.

6. Adding RB Thomas Jones, C Casey Wiegmann, And G Ryan Lilja

These three players have been essential in the success of the Chiefs offense during the '10 season.

Thomas Jones has racked up 879 rushing yards and six touchdowns while providing a solid mentor and a solid veteran presence to young star Jamaal Charles.

Weigmann and Lilja have helped change an offensive line from one of the worst in the league to one of the league's best units this season.

This might not be one of the flashiest moments of the season, but as we look back at it now, it was an important part of the Chiefs year and has propelled them to a playoff team now.

5. Adding Coordinators Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel

The addition of these two proven coordinators to the Chiefs staff prior to the '10 season has already paid big dividends to the team as KC is much improved in both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Offensive Coordinator Charlie Weis has been working with QB Matt Cassel and there has been noticeable growth and improved play from Cassel since his first season with the club.

Defensive Coordinator has turned around a defense that couldn't stop the run a season ago, to one of the better run defenses in the league. He has also had his hand in designing schemes to confuse and frustrate multiple opposing QBs during this season.

Most important, these two veteran coaches have helped young head coach Todd Haley mature and have taken more pressure off the second-year head man of the Chiefs.

4. The Chiefs 2010 NFL Draft

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli might have possibly drafted the best rookie class in the history of the franchise back in April of this year.

He picked up three immediate starters in S Eric Berry, S Kendrick Lewis and TE Tony Moeaki, along with two versatile guys like WR/KR/PR Dexter McCluster and CB/KR/PR Javier Arenas.

Of course, the former Tennessee Volunteer Eric Berry was the prized possession of this class but the sudden impact and depth of this class make it that much better when you look at the class as a whole.

With these players maturing with each year, this could go down as one of the best draft classes that the league has even seen.

3. The Cassel/Bowe Connection

SEATTLE - NOVEMBER 28: Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe #82 of the Kansas City Chiefs is congratulated by quarterback Matt Cassel #7 and Tony Moeaki #81after scoring a touchdown to take a 34-17 lead against the Seattle Seahawks at Qwest Field on November 28, 20

When Chiefs QB Matt Cassel came to Kansas City in the spring of '09 after a trade with the New England Patriots, there were early rumors that he and receiver Dwayne Bowe were already starting to try to get on the same page before they even got on the football field together.

After not playing much with Cassel last year due to being limited by personal issues, Bowe has seemingly found that connection with Cassel in the '10 season.

The two have hooked up for 15 touchdowns this year and have really complimented each other well as they both are having Pro Bowl years.

This connection is a huge reason why the Chiefs have been able to win the AFC West this season.

2. Matt Cassel Returns From Appendectomy With Win Over Rams

Chiefs QB Matt Cassel underwent an appendectomy just a few days before his team's Week 14 matchup against the Chargers.

Just 11 days after the surgery, Cassel made got the start on the road against the St. Louis Rams and lead his team to victory.

Many have called it one of the gutsiest calls for a QB to make due to the fact that this type of surgery usually requires a little more time to rest.

It was a defining moment in both Cassel and the Chiefs' 2010 season.

1. The New Arrowhead Is Unveiled

Opening up the new Arrowhead was easily the defining moment of the year 2010 for the Kansas City Chiefs organization.

This was the moment where current Chiefs owner Clark Hunt was to show the rest of the world that he cares about this team and is willing to do whatever it takes(such as bring in entirely new management) to turn this franchise around.

What made this moment even better was the fact that the Chiefs were able to show that they have a product on the field that matches the new stadium with an opening game win against division rival San Diego to start the '10 season.
