The 20 Funniest Track and Field Fails Recently

Todd BoldizsarDec 27, 2010

It takes tremendous skill, effort and coordination to compete in track and field events. Some are great sprinters, others can jump higher than the average grasshopper, while some can throw oddly shaped objects great distances.

However, there are those moments these stellar athletes would like to forget. Whether caught on camera in precarious positions, eating turf on the track or sitting on their pole vaulting pole, these are certainly...

The 20 Funniest Track and Field Fails Recently

Honorable Mention: Steve Urkel Sighting at Shot put Competition

1 of 21

This one is funny, but isn't a fail. Therefore, it receives an honorable mention on this countdown. Watch as this shot put contestant limbers up the Urkel way before launching the shot put.

All he needs are some suspenders and glasses to go along with those insanely short track shorts and he will have himself his very own sitcom!

20. Pole Vaulter Breaks Pole

2 of 21

An unfortunate consequence of the struggling economy are the budget cuts schools are experiencing nation wide. For example, check out this documentary on pole vaulters switching from graphite poles to birchwood substitutes.

Just kidding. Watch as the pole shatters into several pieces, then some other contestants get hit in the head with their poles.

By the way, I promise they get more entertaining after this.

19. Hammers Away!

3 of 21

One too many spins and this guy is going down in a flailing heap. The toss actually finds its mark, but it's the technique of this hammer tosser that gets the laughs.

The motion is just a little over the top, and you can't help but wonder if this is just too much effort for too little of a reward.

18. America's Funniest Home Videos Contestant?

4 of 21

Watch as two junior varsity athletes compete in the 100 meter dash. One of the kids comes up short of the finish line, and eats dirt in the process.

The sound effect is perfectly timed as the kid takes a header.

17. Audio Deliciousness at a Javelin Competition

5 of 21

Listen to this video of a javelin tosser. Yes, that's right, I said listen. Once given the all-clear, the javelin tosser lets it fly, but somehow it only gets about halfway to the intended target.

If you listen carefully, you can clearly hear the sound of the javelin hitting him in the back of the head. There are no sound effects added!

16. Hurdles Face Plant

6 of 21

The best part about this video isn't even the girl kissing the track. Sometimes the audio of the footage can be the most entertaining part.

In this one, listen to the girl's friends support her with everything they have, yelling words of encouragement and shouting out her name. Maybe the shouting was distracting, as she trips on a hurdle and braces her fall with her nose.

Suddenly the girls go completely silent, then one asks if it was caught on tape. Priceless!

15. Title Leaves Much To Be Desired...

7 of 21

When I stumbled upon this video, I thought I was going to see something EPIC. However, I soon discovered it was only mildly funny.

I couldn't help but think, "Where are all the loved ones in his life to talk him out of this?" It's kind of like American Idol in that way. They think they can sing, and no one that cares about them cares enough to tell them they can't sing.

Someone should care enough about this guy to tell him he can't hurdle a speed bump, let alone a race hurdle.

14. Just The Tip

8 of 21

It's amazing how easy it is to find videos like this on the web, given the astronomical odds of the pole lining up with the same body part in a similar position, given all the variables involved.

Ok, enough scientific talk. This guy successfully clears the bar, only to have his manhood checked by the pole less than half a second later. Obviously, the pole wasn't impressed with his athletic prowess:

"Sure you can clear the bar, but can you take a hit?"

Knock Knock

13. High Jump, Low Jump

9 of 21

The technique was flawless, the approach was perfect, the result...well two out of three ain't bad. Watch as this female high jump contestant trips at the last second and disappears in front of the mat.

Official measurement: 0.02 inches, a new record! For shortest fail ever...

12. This Just SOUNDS Dangerous

10 of 21

You would think the hammer toss would sound innocent enough...

Check out this guy's first-ever attempt at the hammer toss, indoors no less! Maybe it was the plywood board on the smooth gym surface that disrupted this one...Ya think?

11. Shot Put To This Guy Means

11 of 21

This guy has tremendous form, but terrible aim. Watch this quick clip as a high school field athlete makes his third attempt at tossing the shot put, only to lose his grip and the iron ball.

Get this guy some Stick 'Em!

10. Epic Collision With No Subtitles

12 of 21

Here is a video of a man sprinting toward the camera in total concentration while a woman carrying her bag doesn't realize he's charging right at her. Since the commentary is in a foreign language, I'll provide my own commentary below:

Blond Woman: "Why is everyone staring at me?"

Sprinter: "Oh shoot, I forgot to tie a shoelace."

Blond Woman: "I must look great in these shorts. I'm going to give my trainer a raise."

Sprinter: "Something doesn't feel right, I can't be at the finish li...WTF!!!!?????"

Blond Woman: "Sounds like a freight train is rolling in..."

I'll leave the rest to the video...

9. Running With Scissors Is Officially Not The Most Dangerous Hobby

13 of 21

This is how news stations stay in business. The most sensational part of this video is the crowd of people standing around watching this. Someone has to know her on a personal level and realize she shouldn't be around sharp objects.

In a seriousness, this embarrassing moment could happen to anyone, that's why the javelin toss can be so much fun to watch. After all, nobody watches NASCAR strictly for the left turns.

8. Starting Off The Career With Low Expectations

14 of 21

According to the caption, this is the first-ever long jump attempt of Josue Held. I sincerely hope for this kid's sake that someone tells him it's where you feet land that counts, not you chin.

In all seriousness, Held gets some serious air. However, it pales in comparison to the amount of oxygen he or she will receive from the paramedics when they revive him or her.

7. Funeral For Pole Vaulter's Private Area

15 of 21

This one really does add injury to insult. Not only does he not make it anywhere close to the bar, but he also nuts himself in the process.

Would anyone like to say a few kind words for this man's left testicle? Cue "Taps."

6. Ladies and Gentlemen We Give You...The Two-Fer

16 of 21

Viewers get a double dose of fail in this women's hurdles video. Kudos to the creator of this one for the build-up to this race, and props to the girls in the race for continuing while everyone else was already on their water break while strolling over to the next event.

These girls give it their all and certainly show the "Courage to Continue" as one hurdle after another destroys their Olympic dreams.

5. Hurdles Fail

17 of 21

This one takes place at the SHS Athletics Carnival, and this is the 17+ Open 110m hurdles. However, someone forgot to tell this contestant about the hurdles part.

He looks like a disgruntled teenager, pressured into competition by overly zealous parents. Rather than simply voicing his complaints, he decides to bomb the competition in protest.

A challenge to viewers: Count how many hurdles he actually does correctly. You might have to watch it a few times.

4. Cue The Mystikal Song

18 of 21

Short but sweet is just how we like it. In this quick clip, a sprinter gets off to a great stop before somebody gets in the way. She plows the bystander like a linebacker and makes the unsuspecting victim munch track.

"Move b$%&, get out the way!"

3. What About This Seemed Like A Good Idea?

19 of 21

Mascots are known for being intentionally goofing, uncoordinated and silly. So when you win a track race at the Olympics, what crosses your mind that says, "Everyone is looking at me in admiration as one of the top athletes in the world. I think I'll ride a dude in a bear suit for a victory lap."

There was no way this was going to end well, and we proudly bring you the results on the track and field FAIL list.

2. Human Yo-Yo

20 of 21

This woman attempts the high jump as if she's on a yo-yo string. Watch as she approaches the bar and doesn't even manage to come close to the mat.

Perhaps it was her jog towards the jump that needed a bit more speed. Maybe it was the distracting red visor and sunglasses. Or maybe it was no one stepping in to say, "Why?" that led to this great high jump fail.

1. One-Man Totem Pole

21 of 21

Check out this poor pole vaulter MVHS Invitationals. He makes it over the bar with ease, but the landing was nothing close to relaxing. He always said he wanted to make a totem pole in shop class, but I don't think he had ambitions of being the top piece on a one-man, real-life totem.
