NFL Picks Week 16: Packers, Chiefs and Teams Winning Their Ways into Playoffs

Patrick ClarkeDec 24, 2010

Week 16, two weeks left and very little room for error. Teams like Atlanta and New England are playing solely for postseason positioning while the others like Jacksonville and Green Bay are playing for their season.

Some matchups this week look good on paper, and most will likely look better on television.

Here are the weekend's top games for playoff hopefuls, who wins, and what it will mean for the postseason shakeup.

Patriots Over Bills

Tom Brady's Pats are in Buffalo on Sunday to battle the division rival Bills. New England can lock up home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win this weekend.

The 4-10 Bills are tough, but will most likely fade as the game goes on giving way to the Patriots and their championship determination.

The New York Jets are road warriors this season winning six out of seven away from New York. Their final road test will come on Sunday as they take on the 10-4 Chicago Bears at windy Soldier Field.

The Jets made a big statement with a win over Pittsburgh last weekend and a win this week would take them to 11-4 on the year and a lock for the AFC wild card.

The Baltimore Ravens will take to the road this Sunday against division rival Cleveland. The Browns are .500 at home this season and always a tough opponent for the Ravens.

Baltimore is still alive for the AFC North however as well as a first round bye and will see to it that they don't slip up against Cleveland.

Kansas City is 6-0 this season at home and that's where their final two games will be played. The Chiefs take on the Tennessee Titans this Sunday in a game they need to stay ahead of San Diego in the AFC West.

A win would bring Kansas City to 10-5 on the year and in position to win the division with a victory in week 17.

Tennessee is 1-6 in it's last seven games and the Chiefs are strong at Arrowhead.

Rams Over 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers and the St. Louis Rams reignite another NFC West rivalry on Sunday when they battle for the divisional crown.

A 49ers' loss eliminates them from the race while a Rams' loss throws the division championship up for grabs.

At that point three teams (San Francisco, St. Louis, & Seattle) could be tied for the NFC West lead at 6-9. Pitiful indeed.

There's no way that happens right?

Jaguars Over Redskins

The Jaguars will host the Redskins in week 16 in the hopes of winning out and having Indianapolis slip up along the way.

A Jacksonville loss severely hurts it's playoff chances as the Colts hold the tiebreaker over the Jags.

The Redskins come in facing all kinds of adversity and have proven to be a doormat the past few weeks for struggling teams.

Chargers Over Bengals

San Diego visits Cincinnati this weekend with AFC West title aspirations. The Chargers likely won't get a wild card slot this year.

Again, like in season's past, they will be forced to steal the division in the final weeks of the regular season.

The Bengals are wrapping up a dismal year after winning the AFC North a year ago and will likely give in to the Chargers if they can get out to an early lead.

Raiders Over Colts

The Oakland Raiders, surprisingly come in at .500 late in the season. Their opponent however comes in above .500, hardly surprising for Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts need a win to maintain their edge over Jacksonville for the division lead. A loss would jeopardize their postseason chances and open the door for the Jags.

Oakland has been a playoff caliber team all season long and on the road the banged up Colts slip up just a little.

The Green Bay Packers and New York Giants meet up on Sunday at Lambeau in an epic playoff preview. The Packers come into the game losers of two straight and desperate for a season-saving win.

The Giants on the other hand enter Sunday's contest with shaken confidence after blowing a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter last week.

A Packers' loss would eliminate them from the playoff picture while a Giants loss would hurt their chances but keep them alive for a wild card spot.

  • New York is eliminated from the NFC East race but is alive for a wild card

Buccaneers Over Seahawks

The Bucs host the curious Seahawks this weekend in Tampa Bay. Both teams are still alive for the postseason but are looking at slim chances at the moment.

Tampa Bay must steal a wild card spot to get in and Seattle would have to earn a win over the Rams in week 17 to take the NFC West.

The Bucs are the better team by far however and after losing to the Lions at home last week they will be ready for the Seahawks on Sunday.

  • Tampa Bay remains alive for a NFC wild card
  • Seattle remains alive for the NFC West title with a win over St. Louis in week 17

Eagles Over Vikings

The Eagles look to keep rolling right into the playoffs when they take on the Vikings in Philly this Sunday night on NBC.

Minnesota is coming off of a throttling at the hands of the Bears and with rookie Joe Webb starting they stand little chance.

Michael Vick keeps the train chugging and Philly wins easy at home.

Eagles 27 Vikings 10

  • Philadelphia clinches the NFC East division and remains alive for a first round bye

Saints Over Falcons

BALTIMORE, MD - DECEMBER 19: Lance Moore #16 of the New Orleans Saints celebrates a 4th quarter touchdown during the game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium on December 19, 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland. The Ravens defeated the Saints 30-24.

The Saints will look to reclaim their division when they visit Atlanta on Monday night. The Falcons are 6-0 at home however and likely have other plans, like clinching the NFC South title.

A Saints loss drops them into the wild card race but a Saints win keeps their slim division chances alive while opening the door for both New Orleans and Philadelphia to steal a first round bye.

Pretty tricky right?

Saints 31 Falcons 28

  • New Orleans remains alive for the NFC South title
  • Atlanta remains alive for the NFC South title while controlling it's own destiny
