Roll Tide and Our Favorite Sports Commercials of 2010
Sports commercials are some of the best on TV and 2010 was no exception. We had plenty of ads hit the airwaves that gave us goosebumps, made us laugh or made us shake our heads.
There were plenty to choose from but I took the best 25 and told you why. If you agree or disagree with my rankings, be sure to let that be known in the comments. If there's one that I missed, be sure to link to that in the comments.
All I can say is that I can't wait for 2011's commercials.
No. 25: JSmoove
1 of 25Any time you shave your legs in a commercial, you get props from me.
Josh Smith did just that in this ad for Adidas and while it's not an ad that will make you laugh out loud, it is an entertaining one that will make you smile as you watch it. The faces that he makes during the ad are what pushes it over the top.
Plus, JSmoove is just a great nickname.
No. 24: Jocks and Nerds
2 of 25Numbers and math aren't what you'd normally associate with jocks, but if you're going to follow baseball, you need both.
Here you see a star athlete and a friend breaking down baseball statistics when some nerdy looking members approach their table in the cafeteria and proceed to tease them for being geeky about sports and statistics.
It's an ad that will leave you smiling.
No. 23: Jeff Van Gundy Takes Over
3 of 25The NBA on ESPN commercials are some of the funniest the network puts out and this year's are no exception.
Amar'e Stoudemire was driving the RV and he is going to be relieved by Jeff Van Gundy, only Van Gundy isn't what you'd call the man with the most stature in the world. So he has to adjust how close the seat is to the wheel and hilarity ensues.
This isn't the first time Van Gundy has poked fun at himself and I respect that.
No. 22: Where Clutch Happens
4 of 25DJ Steve Porter has become popular for his mashups of athletes and coaches talking to the media that the NBA hired him to do some ads for them.
This one was about clutch shooting and players talking about the process of hitting a big shot to help their team win a game. Not only that, but it's spliced in with video of players hitting buzzer beaters, which is always fun.
I think this is one of the best of the series.
No. 21: Season Preview
5 of 25TNT always does a great job of covering the NBA and here's a commercial previewing this year's NBA season.
It's always great to hear players talk about the game and especially to hear them talk about playing for a city, when some players are out for themselves. When you hear guys like Kevin Durant and Amar'e Stoudemire talk about the emotion of doing that, it's just compelling.
I could watch that all day long.
No. 20: Roll Tide
6 of 25This is the latest of the "It's Not Crazy, It's Sports" series and it focuses on the love of Alabama Crimson Tide football.
I think this is a really creative ad and one of the best in the series. I'm not an Alabama fan, but I respect history and tradition and how that weaves into sports. This ad does that perfectly. Some of the situations are pretty humorous as well.
Roll Tide.
No. 19: It's Not Crazy, It's Sports
7 of 25This might be the funniest one in the "It's Not Crazy, It's Sports" series.
Now if you live in the Philadelphia area, you know how important the Eagles are to the city. They're the biggest team in town, even if they haven't won a Super Bowl. People live and die with the Eagles and the ad shows this.
Can Philly fans finally get some respect?
No. 18: Airport Security
8 of 25The NFL on Fox isn't known for producing great television ads, but that changed this year.
This is one ad in a series that divides the crew between those who have won Super Bowls and those that haven't, and the perks that come with it. Going through the airport isn't fun, unless you're a champion evidently.
If only it was that easy to get through the airport.
No. 17: The Reality of Fantasy
9 of 25Chris Johnson was the top pick in everyone's fantasy draft and people count on him week in and week out to help them win their matchup.
If he doesn't live up to the hype, people are disappointed and he has to hear about it from the masses when he goes out in public. This is a humorous ad for ESPN Fantasy Football, showing how his stature affects his life.
I think this ad is simply hilarious.
No. 16: Key Matchups
10 of 25If you haven't noticed by now, it's clear that ESPN makes the best sports commercials.
This is for Sunday NFL Countdown and focuses on Keyshawn Johnson, who is known for wearing some flashy suits while working for ESPN on Sundays. It's him pitching ideas for segments to do on the show and he settles on Key Matchups.
Except it's not what you think. Enjoy.
No. 15: MJ's Greatest Moments
11 of 25NBA 2K11 might be the greatest basketball of all-time and it has the greatest basketball player of all-time on the cover, Michael Jordan.
Here, some of the young stars of today's NBA talk about Michael Jordan's greatest moments in his entire career. In the game, you can play through all of those moments with authentic arenas, sounds and rosters from the era.
It's a great video and pretty funny. Who knew Derrick Rose could cook?
No. 14: Fast Don't Lie
12 of 25The Adidas Slim Chin ads are some of my favorite ads of the past few months.
I think they're funny and while some might find them annoying, I can't get enough of them. I find myself quoting the ads and that's when you know you've struck gold in advertising. Don Draper would be proud of these ads.
Plus, with Dwight Howard and his sense of humor, how can you lose?
No. 13: Tiger Woods '11
13 of 25I honestly never saw this ad until I went looking for sports ads from the last year, but it was worth the find.
Tiger Woods has his own video game and this year you could play the Ryder Cup in the game. Here is an ad announcing that fact. Even Mike Ditka makes an appearance and coaches up Tiger and his squad during the big match.
I'm not shocked this ad wasn't in wide circulation considering the past year for Tiger.
No. 12: It's Good To Have a Ring
14 of 25Now this is the best ad of the past couple of months.
This is the first ad I ever saw from the "It's Good to Have A Ring" series, and it shows you how good it is to go out to the club when you're a Super Bowl champion. I just think the ad is hilarious and even Dr. House makes an appearance.
That makes the ad worth it by itself.
No. 11: C'mon Man!
15 of 25The Sunday NFL Countdown crew is back and this time it's with Philadelphia Eagles wideout DeSean Jackson.
There's a whole series of ads where the crew intrude on the player's personal lives in order to prepare for the broadcast, and this shows the group helping Jackson take the trash out and get the paper, only for Jackson to drop the paper.
Cris Carter's reaction is priceless.
No. 10: Floyd Mayweather Jr. Vs. Brian Kelly
16 of 25Shockingly enough, this is only one of two SportsCenter ads on the countdown.
You'd think with how insanely popular those ads were and have been for years that there would be more, but no sir. This one has Floyd Mayweather Jr. taking out his frustrations on Brian Kelly....in front of Brian Kelly.
You have to love Money Mayweather.
No. 9: United
17 of 25Who doesn't remember the World Cup from this summer?
It was an amazing event for American soccer and everyone will remember where they were when Landon Donovan scored the goal to advance the United States into the next round. It was one of the most amazing things I ever watched as a sports fan and there aren't many things that can top it.
This ad brings back great memories.
No. 8: Derrick Rose and Slim Chin
18 of 25Here's the ad that started it all with Slim Chin.
Derrick Rose is one of the youngest stars in the NBA and now he's getting his shine on with Adidas. These ads are great. I can't tell you how many times I've chuckled at this ad because it's just so goofy and over the top.
I really hope they make more of these. I can't get enough.
No. 7: There's a Soldier in All of Us
19 of 25Here it is. The ad that started a huge controversy.
Now you might be wondering why an ad for Call of Duty: Black Ops is a sports ad, but it's because Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant is in here, for the game's "There's a Soldier in All of Us" campaign leading up to the release.
People thought Kobe shouldn't have done it, but I personally think it was an awesome ad.
No. 6: Bulls Vs. Ghengis Khan
20 of 25Michael Jordan's Bulls teams were almost unbeatable, but were they all-time great?
Today's NBA stars discuss that in the NBA 2K11 ad where they compare the Bulls to some of the best teams in recent memory. One of the funnier moments is when the Bulls are compared to the Boston Celtics.
Rajon Rondo almost makes this ad by himself.
No. 5: Fear the Deer
21 of 25Brandon Jennings is one of the best young point guards in the league, and is also not a fan of GPS devices if you believe this ESPN ad.
Jennings and company are lost during their travels and are trying to get back on track when the RV comes across a deer in the road. That's when things get awkward and super hilarious, as there's a staring contest between the two.
The very end of this ad makes it even funnier.
No. 4: Who Touched My Razor?
22 of 25As a Red Sox fan, I can't stand Derek Jeter, but I respect him.
I gained a little more respect for him when he did this SportsCenter ad with some of the ESPN guys and the Phanatic. The Phanatic is one of, if not the best mascot in all of sports, and the awkwardness in this ad just pushes it over the top.
Who knew Jeter had comedic chops?
No. 3: The Journey
23 of 25Gatorade is synonymous with sports and leading up to the Super Bowl, this ad ran talking about the NFL playoffs.
I must say, this is one of the most epic advertisements I've seen in a long time. If you don't get goosebumps watching this advertisement, then you're not a real sports fan. I'm sorry, but that's true. It's a great job and it's so compelling to watch.
I can't wait to see what Gatorade does this year.
No. 2: Tiger's Return Ad
24 of 25This ad isn't this high because of its effectiveness, but just how jaw-dropping it was.
To use your dead father's memory and voice to help you try and get past a scandal in which you cheated on your wife with numerous women is just something most people couldn't get their heads around, and baffled so many people in the media.
It's still so memorable that it has to be ranked highly.
No. 1: LeBron's Rise Ad
25 of 25This was the easiest decision I had in making this list.
With the way that LeBron James left Cleveland to join up wth Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami and the reaction that it got across the world, this advertisement attacked all of the criticism.
It might not have been a valid comeback, but it was just stunning to watch when it came out, and people couldn't stop talking about it. That's the mark of a great commercial.
