NFL Playoff Picture: Who's Getting In and Who Will Be Bounced Out?
We don't know just who will be in the NFL Playoffs yet, but that doesn't stop us from acting like we do. As teams continue to fight for home field advantage, division crowns and their post-season lives, we look at who's going to make the cut and who's going to win it all.
With only two weeks remaining in the season, only one division, the NFC North, has been claimed, by the Chicago Bears. Others have locked their spot in the playoffs but are still trying to fend off other teams looking to improve their position in the bracket.
Here are predictions for each round of the playoffs.
NFC Wild Card Game--Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears
1 of 11
In a repeat of the season finale in which the Packers (10-6) beat the Bears (10-6) to make the playoffs, it's a question of believing in Aaron Rogers or Jay Cutler.
While Rogers struggled early, he's looking like the player expected to lead the Packers back to the top. Cutler, on the other hand, doesn't have a lot expected of him but is playing well now that offensive coordinator Mike Martz has tailored his offense to help Cutler. Weather will surely play a factor, but weather is inherent when playing outdoors in Chicago and Green Bay, which these teams do.
It's hard to bet against Rogers, even though the Bears have the edge in the running game. Chicago hasn't earned a lot of believers in its run to winning NFC North.
Prediction: 27-13 Green Bay
NFC Wildcard Game--New Orleans Saints @ St. Louis Rams
2 of 11
The Saints (11-5) have been roaring down the stretch, scoring at least 30 points in 5 of their last 6 games. The Rams (8-8) will manage to hold off Seattle and San Francisco to sneak into the playoffs and earn a home game.
The Saints know what to do in the playoffs, as they showed last season. And doing it indoors at St. Louis is just like what they're used to in the Superdome. Sam Bradford and the Rams are a nice story and should be a force in the future, but it's hard to see them having enough--even at home--to hold off the defending champs.
After all, these teams have already met this season, with New Orleans winning 31-13.
Prediction: 34-17 New Orleans
AFC Wildcard Game--Pittsburgh Steelers @ San Diego Chargers
3 of 11
The Chargers (10-6) complete their incredible, season-saving turnaround by winning out and thwarting Kansas City by way of a better record in the AFC West.
Pittsburgh (11-5) stumbles in the final week at Cleveland and now has to face the NFL's best defense (259.8 yards allowed per game) in San Diego's house. It's a tough ask, even of "Big" Ben Roethlisberger, Rashard Mendenhall and the Steelers' own stingy defense.
Phillip Rivers will be slinging the rock and trying to avoid James Harrison and Troy Polamalu--that is if Polamalu is healthy.
Prediction: 24-20 San Diego
AFC Wildcard Game--New York Jets @ Indianaopolis Colts
4 of 11
The Jets (12-4) pay visit to the Indianapolis Colts (10-6) with both teams in a strange place. The Jets have overcome offensive ineptitude to get here, while the Colts have dealt with constant injury issues.
LaDainian Tomlinson may be running out of gas at this point, making a late surge by Shonn Greene all the more important. Can New York get timely running from its duo of backs and smart play out of quarterback Mark Sanchez?
Conversely, the Colts will need enough of a rushing attack to offset injuries in the receiving corps. Betting against Peyton Manning in the playoffs at home is a dangerous move.
Prediction: 31-21 Indianapolis
NFC Divisional Round--Green Bay Packers @ Atlanta Falcons
5 of 11
We've seen this one before and it went Atlanta's way, 20-17. There is nothing flashy about the Falcons offense, with Michael Turner (4.2 yards per carry) grinding out yards methodically and Matt Ryan getting chunks here and there through the passing game.
Although Green Bay can put up numbers as well, a lack of a strong running game puts them in a tight spot here. They are currently 24th in the NFL in rushing yards per game. Clay Matthews (12.5 sacks) will have to have a superhuman performance to get this done for the Packers over a Falcons team with Super Bowl written all over them.
Prediction: 27-13 Green Bay
NFC Divisional Round--New Orleans Saints @ Philadelphia Eagles
6 of 11
The Saints ride a steady offense and an opportunistic defense. In this game, they meet the Eagles (11-5) and quarterback Michael Vick, who just doesn't turn the ball over. He's thrown 20 touchdowns to just 5 interceptions in 11 games this season while vaulting himself into the MVP discussion.
New Orleans needs to create turnovers, otherwise the Saints will be chasing Philly's speedy play-makers all over the field all game long.
Philadelphia's never out of a game, evidenced by last week's stunning win over the New York Giants in which the Eagles scored 28 points in the final 7:18 to win, causing the Giants to unravel and miss the playoffs.
Prediction: 34-27 Philadelphia
AFC Divisional Round--Indianapolis Colts @ New England Patriots
7 of 11
Once again, it's Colts vs. Pats. Manning vs. Brady. It's sure to be a TV ratings bonanza, but the game may not live up the hype.
These are teams in completely different places. The Patriots (14-2) and Tom Brady can seem to do no wrong, no matter the opponent, no matter the weather. Has New England ever lost under Bill Belichick in the snow?
As for Peyton Manning, he's done more with less than just about anyone in the league this season. Although he won't care for that as as silver lining, it might be all he's left with after this one.
Prediction: 37-21 New England
AFC Divisional Round--San Diego Chargers @ Baltimore Ravens
8 of 11
Baltimore (12-4) uses two wins to close out the season and Pittsburgh's final week loss to win the AFC North and gain its bye and home field advantage in the second round. From there, the game is put in Ray Rice's (114.8 total yards per game) hands and feet.
San Diego brings in its high-flying aerial attack, boosted by the return of wide receiver Vince Jackson. But the key to the Chargers' success is a consistent running threat from Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert. Meeting with Baltimore's fifth-ranked rush defense doesn't bode well.
Prediction: 17-13 San Diego
NFC Championship Game--Philadelphia Eagles @ Atlanta Falcons
9 of 11
This could very well be the most exciting game of the entire post-season, as two teams with a flair for the dramatic battle for their place in the Super Bowl. It would also mark the return of Michael Vick to Atlanta, the team that drafted him and then released him amidst allegations and convictions of organized dog-fighting.
Vick's professional beginnings against Vick's redemptive past. I can hear Joe Buck spinning prose now.
But this is Matt Ryan's house now, and he's made sure people know it, going 19-1 at home in his young career. Can Matty Ice keep the magic alive against Atlanta's former, fallen hero?
Prediction: 35-30 Atlanta
AFC Championship Game--San Diego Chargers @ New England Patriots
10 of 11
San Diego gets plenty of passing and just enough running to upset Baltimore and keep its Super Bowl dreams alive. New England races past Indianapolis to set up another match-up of two of the best quarterbacks in the league.
Tom Brady, the clinical general takes on Philip Rivers, the menacing gunslinger. It's another cold weather game for San Diego. And it's facing a Patriots team on a warpath to erase feelings of a 18-1 finish in 2009.
New England won narrowly in San Diego earlier this season, and likely will handle things better at home, possibly in the snow.
Prediction: 21-14 New England
Super Bowl--Atlanta Falcons Vs. New England Patriots
11 of 11
It ends up coming down to the two teams that became Super Bowl favorites mid-season and ultimately didn't disappoint. The Patriots are favorites because of their experience.
By the time the teams reach the Super Bowl, they have won a combined 22 games in a row. But now someone has to lose.
The Patriots once again reach the pinnacle, staving off a late rally from the Falcons. There is just too much experience, too much Tom Brady fire, too much vengeance on the minds of the Patriots. Matt Ryan and the Falcons will be here again and probably win.
But not against this Patriot team.
Prediction: 34-28 New England
