Rex Ryan: Would T.O., Ochocinco Be Good Fit In New York?
With the news that the Cincinnati Bengals will not try and re-sign WR Terrell Owens the speculation has begun about where he will play in 2011. Certainly Owens has not had a banner year in Cincinnati from a publicity standpoint (or anywhere he has ever played for that matter) but he is still a productive receiver in a league that doesn't have a lot of those.
Chad Ochocinco isn't rumored to be going anywhere, yet, but maybe the Bengals decide that they are tired of the shenanigans that he brings to the table and moves away from the outspoken wide receiver.
So where could they end up playing next year?
Why not New York?
The coach, Rex Ryan, is as similar to their personalities as anyone else in the NFL is. They still have the talent and ability to be productive players in the NFL and Mark Sanchez could use some additional weapons on the outside.
Here are 5 reasons why it would work and 5 reasons that it wouldn't work for T.O. and Ochocinco in New York.
Reason It Would Work 1. Rex Ryan’s Personality
1 of 10
The Jets coach is a free spirit. He loves to have fun and not take things too seriously. That kind of bravado would be a perfect fit for the types of personalities that T.O. and Ochocinco have.
Those two have never played with a guy who is loose and knows how to have fun at all times. They have mostly been stuck around guys who are strict disciplinarian type coaches, with the exception of Steve Mariucci who coached Owens in San Francisco.
That mixing could be a great fit for these two players.
Reason It Wouldn’t Work 1. Rex Ryan’s Personality
2 of 10
As great as Rex Ryan’s personality is and how much it seems to match Owens and Ochocinco’s, it could be a disaster of epic proportions.
Because Ryan is so loose it could make Owens and Ochocinco feel like they would have more freedom to do whatever they want to do. When Ryan would try to get their attention they would likely shrug it off because that’s been their pattern throughout their careers.
Would Work 2. Jets Need Playmakers
3 of 10
The Jets traded for Santonio Holmes this past offseason and he had some questionable character traits. Granted he never tried to rip a team apart but he has had some issues in the past.
They are willing to take chances on players if they feel it will help them win a championship. They are in need of some more playmakers on the outside to become a complete team and compete with teams like New England, Baltimore, Indianapolis, etc.
Wouldn’t Work 2. New York Media
4 of 10
T.O. and Ochocinco love the media. They are drawn to it like few players in professional sports today. They have never messed with the New York media though.
The media in New York is unlike anything that either of these guys has ever seen, except Owens when he was in the Super Bowl but that was only for two weeks. Everything that they do would be under such intense scrutiny.
Maybe they would love that, but it wouldn’t be good for them.
Would Work 3. It’s New York
5 of 10
If there’s one thing that both T.O. and Ochocinco love it’s being the center of attention. They crave all of the spotlight and actually tend to feed off of it.
There is no bigger spotlight in the world then playing sports in New York. They would have all eyes on them in the biggest sports city in the United States. That’s definitely something that would appeal to both of these men.
Wouldn’t Work 3. Mark Sanchez
6 of 10
Every quarterback loves to have weapons to play with. It helps make them look better and it’s often better for the team. Right now Mark Sanchez needs weapons to throw to.
However, based on reports he has a very frail psyche and the slightest criticism really eats at him. If T.O. and Ochocinco were to call him out like they have past quarterbacks it might severely damage him and his relationship with the franchise.
Would Work 4. The Jets Receiving Corps Will Be Free Agents After This Season
7 of 10
The Jets top three receivers, Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, and Brad Smith will all be free agents at the end of the 2010 season. They may not be able to re-sign all of them or look for upgrades on the free agent market.
T.O. and Ochocinco would make the Jets better at the wide receiver position then they are right now. If they struggle in the playoffs don’t be surprised to see the Jets shake things up.
Wouldn’t Work 4. Disrupts Team Chemistry
8 of 10
Right now the Jets don’t have a lot of big personalities on their team, with the exception of Rex Ryan, and they have a dynamic that really seems to work for them. They have meshed together very well as a unit.
Bringing in two very brash personalities could be a divisive force inside the locker room. Being a cohesive unit is something that teams in the NFL need in order to be successful. These two seem to put their own agenda ahead of the team’s agenda.
Would Work 5. If It’s Just One Year, What’s The Worst That Could Happen?
9 of 10
History has shown that if you keep T.O. for more then one year things can get pretty volatile. However, if you are only looking for a one year fix at the receiver position then this could be the deal that the Jets are looking for.
It’s the equivalent of going all-in when playing poker. You throw everything on the table for one year and hope that it works out. If it does, you have a season that no one can ever take away from you. If it doesn’t, you will be in a bit of a bind the year after but you worry about that when it happens.
Wouldn’t Work 5. T.O. and Ochocinco Aren’t Team Guys
10 of 10
The biggest reason that T.O. and Ochocinco wouldn’t work in New York, or anywhere for that matter, is because they have no idea what it means to play for a team. They need to learn the concept of the team before they can be successful anywhere.
True, they both put up great numbers but what do they have to show for it? Owens made it to a Super Bowl with the Eagles but he didn’t play in any postseason game before the Super Bowl, so how important was he?
If they want to win in any environment they need to develop a team-first attitude with the way that they play.
