NFL Draft Rumors: 10 Teams Who Will Look for More 2011 Draft Picks
As we have learned in the past decade, it's never too early to start looking forward to the NFL Draft, as, like Christmas, people seem to start preparing earlier every year.
This year's draft is top-loaded with a few possible franchise changers in Andrew Luck and Patrick Peterson, but unlike so many of the others before it, there is not much offensive line greatness to be had.
There are a few players who will make teams want to trade up to grab, and others that will look like they can trade down to get, and teams, as usual, will be trying to stockpile draft picks, as it is one of the most effective ways to have an successful draft.
I'd say it's the old, "Throw the whole pot of spaghetti against the wall and see what sticks" trick.
So, here is a quick look at 10 teams that, between now and the time they are on the clock in April, will be looking to improve upon their quantity of draft picks.
10. New England Patriots
1 of 10
This is one of Bill Belichick's tried and true keys to running a great football team year in and year out, stockpiling young talent.
Every year it seems that his Patriots are moving to get any draft picks they can, and this season should be no different.
They will look to pick up as many picks as possible in order to improve their offensive line and running back corps, along with grabbing any good outside linebackers, cornerbacks or defensive ends.
9. Houston Texans
2 of 10
It seems like Houston is tired of next year always being the year, and for that, they should be looking to improve through the draft.
They already have an excellent offense, with the only possible holes coming at tight end and center, but their defense will need a lot of attention, as in more than seven picks worth of attention.
Houston should be looking to acquire quality picks, maybe even a higher first-rounder, in order to improve their lackluster secondary, which badly needs each safety spot reevaluated and possibly multiple corners.
8. Denver Broncos
3 of 10
Whether the Broncos decide to go with Kyle Orton for another year as their quarterback, or make a move toward the Mile High Jesus, one thing is for sure: they'll need a run game to take some pressure off either.
That will mean multiple draft picks in which they go for a revamped crew of guys both in front of and behind the quarterback.
They are looking at needing fresh guards, running backs and tight ends to fill their many offensive holes, and it will take a handful of picks to do so.
7. Dallas Cowboys
4 of 10
Does anyone else here think that the Cowboys had a disappointing season? Yes? Ok, so I might not be in the minority here then.
This team was supposed to be playing for an unheard of home-field advantage at the Super Bowl, now they are playing to get Jon Kitna 30,000 yards. Great.
Heads have rolled and heads should continue to roll.
Dallas is looking at a new regime coming in, one that will look to separate itself from the old one, which should mean moving disruptive or out-of-line players for some young talent and draft picks.
They'll need help on both the offensive and defensive line, along with secondary help in both safety spots—something which they should be able to find in this draft.
6. Washington Redskins
5 of 10
Washington has a number of holes to fill, and with Mike Shanahan at the helm of the Redskins, they should show off a pretty good draft class.
Shanahan likes to draft speed positions, namely wide receivers and cornerbacks, and in a perfect storm, there is not only a wealth of both in this draft, but definite holes at both positions on his team.
He should look to draft a high-caliber receiver in the first couple of rounds and then look to lock down one of the many corners in this draft.
5. Cleveland Browns
6 of 10
Cleveland is in a great position to make a move in either direction in this draft.
They are in the perfect spot to swap places with a team trying to trade down, and in a good spot for teams trying to trade up.
They showed that they have a wealth of good, young players this season, and that should lead to a huge youth movement in Cleveland, and possibly a playoff team in the next few seasons.
4. Carolina Panthers
7 of 10
Carolina is winning the Andrew Luck sweepstakes as of right now, and should grab him, as their quarterbacks are uninspired, at best.
However, if they do decide to continue with the (cringe) Jimmy Clausen era, then trading down is an option, garnering them more picks in the process.
Regardless of what they do with their likely No. 1 pick, they should look to improve with youth in this draft to fill their many holes, which means stockpiling draft picks.
3. Cincinnati Bengals
8 of 10
To say the Bengals are a shoddy team is an understatement.
They need offensive line help, secondary help, quarterback help, running back help. You name it, they need it.
They should be looking to move on from the Marvin Lewis era, as people have been calling for his head, along with quarterback Carson Palmer's, and just may end up getting both, and draft some quality guys to put down a basis of a team and start over.
2. Buffalo Bills
9 of 10
Buffalo is going to need help in some key positions as far as the 2011 draft goes.
They need tons of secondary help, and lucky for them there are quite a few good corners and safeties that are going to be in the draft in April.
They should look to stockpile a good number of picks and bolster their defense with speed and height.
1. The NFC West
10 of 10
Is this a cop-out? Ya-huup. But is it as true as one plus one equals two? Double Ya-huup.
The NFC West, in case you haven't heard, is terrible. In fact it is so bad, I'll have to whip out a Charles Barkley "turrible" to describe this division.
Every one of the teams in this division needs more help than is even in the draft, but they should be looking to get as much of it as possible, to break ahead of one of their terrible counterparts, and maybe win the division with an 8-8 record next season, instead of what seems to be leaning toward 7-9 this season.
