Dallas Cowboys: 10 Bold Offseason Predictions After a Tough 2010 Season Ends
The 2010 Dallas Cowboys are… yeah, I got nothing. The Cowboys have been bad this season as they started 1-7 and lost their head coach in the process. Later in the season the ‘Boys lost Tony Romo for the year to a broken collar bone as he now sits on the injured reserve.
There have been a few bright spots for the Cowboys. Over their last six games they have four victories and two losses, Jon Kitna has played better than what most expected, and Dallas found its missing running game.
But still, their record is 5-9 and they are out of the playoffs. Team owner Jerry Jones has a lot of work to do in the offseason to fix what’s wrong with his team.
Here are 10 bold offseason moves Jonesy has to make to improve the ‘Boys from Valley Ranch.
Release Marion Barber
1 of 10
I love Marion Barber, I really do. He’s been such a good soldier and his career with Dallas has been nothing short of successful. He has over 4,000 career rushing yards and 46 touchdowns. However, it's time to put the Barberian out to pasture. He’s having his worst statistical season as a Cowboy and I believe his tough running style has finally caught up with him. Time to give my man T.Sizzle a shot, Jerry.
Trade Terrance Newman
2 of 10
Newman is having another typical Terrance Newman season, just good. He has 70 tackles and three picks. That’s not bad considering how terrible the ‘Boys defense has played as of late. But Terrance only has six passes defensed which is the lowest total of his career. He’s been banged up and he’s 32 years old. It's time to get younger in the secondary and maybe trading Newman injects new life into an already lethargic unit.
Keep Roy Williams
3 of 10
Keeping Roy Williams is about as bold as it gets right? ‘Ol Roy has about 530 receiving yards and five touchdowns in his third year in Cowboys blue. But as average as Roy has been for Dallas, we’ve seen glimpses of what he’s capable of. Who knows, maybe when Dez comes back and gets a full season under his belt Roy will have a breakout season. Oh and Jerry, please redo Roy’s contract.
Release Martellus Bennett
4 of 10
It may be time to let homeboy get in the wind. Bennett has been nothing short of a disappointment since being drafted out of Texas A&M. Its only his third season, but when are we going to see Bennett actually, well, breakout? Tight end John Phillips was close to taking over for Bennett before his season-ending injury and it will probably be the same next season. Not the injury of course.
Keep David Buehler
5 of 10
Before you click off of the page just hear me out. The Cowboys released Nick Folk and Billy Cundiff and just look at their recent successes. Buehler is a young guy who just needs more time to develop. David has a strong leg and Dallas can’t keep this kicking carousel going.
Remove the Interim Tag from Jason Garrett’s Title
6 of 10
Cowher’s available and so is Jon Gruden, but continuity means a lot in the NFL and the players have really responded to Garrett's methods. Jason isn’t the cupcake everyone thought he was and his offensive philosophy as head coach varies differently from his ways as an offensive coordinator. Keep the party going Jerry and give the job full-time to Garrett.
Fire Dave Campo—Again
7 of 10
Dave, it's time to go my friend. You were the head coach for a little while and that didn’t work out so you came back to coach the secondary. This past Sunday the Redskins new starting quarterback, Rex Grossman, torched them for four touchdowns and over 300 yards passing. Time to give up the ghosts, Jerry, and let Dave get in the wind.
Revamp The Offensive Line
8 of 10
This isn’t really a bold prediction but it needs to be done. Doug Free is good but the rest of the line is aging. It's time for new blood and for Dallas to get serious about long-term changes.
Release Keith Brooking
9 of 10
It really pains me to say this because I love the leadership that Keith brings to the table. He is such an emotional guy and the ‘Boys feed off his energy. But Brooking can be a liability against the pass and this may the first year since 2000 where Keith doesn’t record at least 100 tackles. He’s 35 and Dallas has some pretty good talent behind him waiting.
Jerry Jones Steps Down As GM
10 of 10
Wouldn’t that be amazing? Jerry finally brings in a person to make the personnel decision for the team and just basically pays the bills. I don’t every see this happening, but maybe his son can talk him into taking a different approach. I mean, he got him to release T.O. didn’t he?
