NFL Playoff Picture: Which Coaches Give Their Teams the Best Odds in Playoffs?
With just two weeks to go in the regular season, the playoff picture is becoming a bit clearer.
The New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons have all clinched spots.
Some teams go into the playoffs with a coach that has been there several times; others are newcomers.
Which of the likely playoff teams' coaches gives them the best shot at winning the Super Bowl?
Honorable Mention
1 of 6
There are two guys who could easily be in the top five if their teams make the playoffs, which they easily could.
John Harbaugh is in his third year as coach of the Ravens. In the first two seasons they made the playoffs, and they look likely to do it again.
Harbaugh's playoff record is 3-2, but he continues to gain experience.
The other man is Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants.
Coughlin has taken some unnecessary heat for not living up to the standards of fans.
But he did win a Super Bowl with the Giants in 2007.
His three one-and-outs in the playoffs with the Giants are otherwise unimpressive.
5. Mike Smith
2 of 6
Smith is only in his third year as a head coach and has only made one playoff appearance before.
In that lone appearance the Falcons were eliminated in the first round.
So why the confidence in him?
Well, in his first three years as a coach the Falcons have been a winning team in each, and this year's team is the league's best.
Smith looks likely to win his second Coach of the Year award in three years.
I doubt they'll win the Super Bowl, simply due to inexperience, but they will make it interesting.
4. Lovie Smith
3 of 6
Lovie Smith is in his seventh season as the Bears' head coach.
In those seasons the Bears have had their ups and down, but this year they are set for their third trip to the playoffs.
Smith has been to the Super Bowl once, when the Bears lost to Colts in 2006.
Smith and his team have already clinched their division, which means they can start planning for the playoffs now.
3. Andy Reid
4 of 6
Andy Reid has been so close so many times.
But his résumé lacks football's biggest achievement.
Reid is looking to take his team to the playoffs for the ninth time in the 12 seasons he has been a coach in Philadelphia.
Will Reid be able to figure out what has plagued his past teams and finally get over the hump?
2. Mike Tomlin
5 of 6
Tomlin is in his fourth year as coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In those four years the Steelers have yet to have a losing season.
In Tomlin's second season the Steelers won the Super Bowl, making him the youngest coach to ever win.
The Steelers are good, their coach is good and they have as good a chance as anyone to win the Super Bowl this year.
1. Bill Belichick
6 of 6
Bill Belichick has three Super Bowl victories.
What more do you need to know?
Belichick is a gutsy, smart coach—and he has all the weapons he needs to find himself in another Super Bowl.
Never bet against the Patriots. You just don't do it.
