Who's Hot and Who's Not in CFB Week 2

Lou VozzaSep 7, 2008

Hot

1. Mississippi QB Jevan Snead. I can see this guy as a pro. 6'3" 215. About the right size. Ole Miss at Wake Forest was easily the best game I've seen so far this year. Rebels came within a hair of knocking the ACC completely out of the Top 25. SEC just keeps getting tougher and tougher. The coaching talent coming into the perennial "have-nots" is already having an effect. Spurrier, Saban, Nutt and Petrino. Good coaches. Believe me, everybody in the SEC is taking a much closer look at their upcoming games with Alabama and Mississippi.

2, Miami's kicker, Matt Bocher. OK, he shanked his first punt, but give the guy a break, he's their punter, kick-off guy and field goal guy. What I liked was that twice in the first half Brandon James of Florida was just about to break his return and Bocher came flying in out of nowhere, stood him up in the open field and laid him out. Probably saved a touchdown both times. Then in the fourth quarter, James was breaking a punt return and Bocher drove him inside where he was tackled by the pursuit. Again might have saved a touchdown. Three great athletic plays you just don't see kickers make. As it was, James still had over 131 return yards. If it wasn't for Boucher's tackling, Florida might have put up 50 and James would have dominated the Sportscenter highlights for days.

3. East Carolina - The first thing I noticed when I tuned in was how big the players on East Carolina's offense are. Sometimes the players on teams from the non-BCS conferences look smaller than the BCS players on TV. You really notice it when you see the service academies play. These guys looked bigger than the West Virginia players. It will be interesting to see how high East Carolina rises in the rankings if they run the table from here. This year's Hawaii?

4. Bill Young - Miami's defensive coordinator completely stymied Florida's offense for 3 quarters, working with mostly freshmen talent. I'm sure Randy Shannon, now the head coach, but formerly the defensive coordinator, had a lot to do with the game planning. Just have to figure out that 4th quarter now.

5. Florida's defense - OK, not that hot, let's say tepid. Gave up 3 points and 148 yard of offense. A bye week to work out the kinks before taking the show on the road to Knoxville. This unit may hold key to NC race.

Not Hot

1. ACC/Big East - If this was a boxing match, both of these guys would be out with TKO's. Conference wise, things are shaking out pretty clearly already this seaon. It's the SEC, Big 12 plus USC.

2. Ohio State - No, I'm not going to pile on. It's not unusual for a national champ contender to have a scare like this. They will play much better next week, but will still be overwhelmed by the Trojans, who are favored by 14 in my book.

3. NFL - Wake me up in January when the games matter.
