They've Named The Strikers, Now Man City Want A Dream Midfield!

Barney CorkhillSep 7, 2008

It didn't take long for Abu Dhabi United Group to stamp their authority on Manchester City and the Premier League.

Not only did they break the British record transfer fee on the very same day they took over at Eastlands, but they have since published a list of their most wanted players.

Of course, as everyone knows by now, they have focused mainly on strikers, with Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Villa, and Fernando Torres all being included. How they would fit all of them into the team I don't know!

But now ADUG have voiced their desire to create the dream midfield. With Robinho and Shaun Wright-Phillips already there, and Cesc Fabregas included in the list of wanted players, a fearsome midfield is already starting to take shape.

But the list has reportedly been extended to include Steven Gerrard and Michael Essien, on Mark Hughe's wishes. In my view, these two are the best in the league, and I think they would work wonderfully together.

But am I worried about the prospect of losing Liverpool's captain and talisman? Well, no I'm not. I firmly believe that Steven Gerrard wouldn't go to Manchester City.

Will the money entice him? Well, that's always a possibility, but Gerrard has turned Chelsea down on more than one occasion in the past, showing that it isn't all about the money for him. Sure, it is important, but he is earning enough at Liverpool to set him up nicely for when he retires.

I'm sure Michael Essien is the same. Sure, ADUG are richer than Roman Abramovich, but the Chelsea players are still getting over £100,000 a week. It'll just be a question of greed if anyone makes the move from Chelsea, or any of the top earners from any of the top clubs, to go to Man City.

Man City can talk about their "Dream Team" as much as they want, but for some players—and I believe Gerrard and Essien to be in this category—money isn't the most important thing.
