Fans Boo Hartline At Commonwealth Stadium Saturday

Jordan ColemanSep 7, 2008

It was a pitiful sight Saturday during the start of the 2nd half in Commonwealth Stadium. Fans was booing Mike Hartline as he started the 2nd half under center for the Wildcats as they beat Norfolk State 38-3.

Coach Rich Brooks had this to say after the game about the fans in Commonwealth Stadium Saturday booing our own starting quarterback.

"I am going to get this off my chest. I am sick to my stomach that our fans in Commonwealth Stadium would boo Mike Hartline when he came out to start the second half. There is no place for that in our stadium. Those two young men are both inexperienced quarterbacks and they are both going to play as we move forward, we need them both. We will put the players on the field to win games, but we don't need booing our own players in Commonwealth Stadium, that just makes me sick to my stomach."

Mike Hartline had this to say after the game ended on the fans booing him.

"I ran out there and just had to take care of my business. Whatever the fans want to do, they can do. Booing me or the whole team, we still have to go out there and do our best. You can't do anything about fans. You just have to go out there and win football games."

Senior wide receiver and team captain Dicky Lyons had this to say about it.

"I was upset because it was like they forgot that he just won us the Governor's Cup. He did a great job for his first starting game. There was a lot of pressure on Mike Hartline and he did a great job. He won Offensive Player of the Game last week. You couldn't ask more from a first start sophomore quarterback. He's doing a great job. We knew he was going back in the game so I was a little upset when the fans booed. If you're going to support us, then support the coach's decision."

I was not at the game this weekend and I, for one, am glad I was not in attendance to witness this. That was totally uncalled for and just pathetic by our fans that participated in booing out Mike Hartline.

These fans are not real fans and they don't deserve to ever set foot in Commonwealth Stadium ever again after that horrible display on our own starting quarterback.

Now, let me say this, I do think that Cobb should be the starter within the next 3 weeks if he keeps his performance up and if Hartline doesn't prove himself. Read my previous article The Randall Cobb Era Begins; Hartline Still Has Much To Prove on my thoughts on the quarterback battle between Cobb and Hartline.

But, that still doesn't give our own fans in our own stadium to boo our own starting QB. That type of behavior is totally unacceptable and uncalled for. Those fans that participated in this should be ashamed and should never step foot back in Commonwealth Stadium ever again.

That is not a true fan by any means.
