Tiger Woods Sex Scandal and the Top Sports Stories of the Decade
Tiger Woods has been a major part of the sports world the past two years and with the decade winding down, we're taking a look at the biggest sports stories for each year from 2000 all the way up to 2010.
I put some honorable mentions for each year so that you can see my thought process. Do you agree or disagree with any of my picks? Make sure to be let it known in the comments.
2000: Subway Series
1 of 11
In 2000, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets met in the World Series that was deemed the Subway Series.
The Yankees went on to beat the Mets and continue the Yankee dynasty that was just getting ready to wind down at the beginning of the decade. The Mets haven't been back to the World Series and the series was marred by Roger Clemens throwing a splintered bat at Mike Piazza.
Those were good times, Mets fans.
Honorable Mention: Bobby Knight fired, Lakers win NBA Title, Mario Lemieux returns from cancer
2001: Tiger Slam
2 of 11
Tiger Woods, upon winning the Masters, had officially won four straight majors, completing something that was deemed the Tiger Slam.
Woods won the tournaments in the best stretch of golf in his career and the only thing holding him back was that he did not win all of them in the same calendar year. Had he, it would have been a grand slam sweep, one of the rarest things in sports.
Too bad this wasn't the only thing about Tiger that shocked us.
Honorable Mention: Ray Bourque wins a Cup, Michael Jordan returns to basketball, Dale Earnhardt dies, Barry Bonds hits 73 home runs. Diammondbacks beat Yankees in World Series
2002: The French Judge
3 of 11
Two gold medals were awarded in pairs figure skating after a French judge revealed that she was under pressure to score the event a certain way.
A Canadian pair and a Russian pair shared the awards as the Canadian pair had their silver medals elevated to gold. It was a huge scandal and gained a lot of attention as figure skating is one of the more popular events.
It also gave comedians plenty of material for jokes.
Honorable Mention: Pat Tillman dies, USA Basketball finishes sixth at World Championships, Patriots upset Rams in playoffs.
2003: BALCO
4 of 11
Steroids in baseball were always talked about in hushed tones. After BALCO, not anymore.
Victor Conte and his lab came under fire and it was the story that helped start the entire steroids scandal and was one of the things that helped bring Barry Bonds down in the end. It started a dark chapter in sports and you can't ignore it.
Who could forget Game of Shadows and the story of Marion Jones and Bonds' steroid programs?
Honorable Mention: LeBron's debut, Steve Bartman, Jordan retires again
2004: The Curse Is Dead
5 of 11
This might have been one of the easier, if not the easiest one to pick.
The Boston Red Sox ended 86 years of torment by beating the rival New York Yankees four games in a row to come back from 3-0 to make it to the World Series, where they swept the St. Louis Cardinals to win the championship.
No Red Sox fan will ever forget that season.
Honorable Mention: Pistons upset Lakers, Mickelson wins first major, Bonds hits 700
2005: Hockey Locks Out
6 of 11
An entire season of hockey was lost in 2005.
The puck never dropped and hockey locked out for an entire season as owners and players squabbled over salaries. It was an ugly period for hockey and the sport hasn't really recovered in terms of the national spotlight.
Who else misses National Hockey Night on ESPN?
Honorable Mention: Baseball returns to Washington, Lance Armstrong wins seventh-straight Tour, White Sox win World Series
2006: The Headbutt
7 of 11
Zinedine Zidane was in the final international game of his career for his native France in the World Cup final against Italy.
It ended with Zidane leaving the pitch early as his team had to play on without him, losing to Italy in penalty kicks after he headbutted an opposing player. It was an ugly way to a magnificent career and speculation ran rampant about what was said to provoke Zidane.
Eventually it was a comment about a female family member that sent him into a rage and he sure defended his family's honor.
Honorable Mention: Steelers Win Super Bowl, Landis cheats to win Tour, Barbaro dies
2007: Duke Lacrosse
8 of 11
Duke lacrosse was a national power that was almost torn to the ground by an ugly scandal.
Members of the team were accused of raping a stripper at a team party and it turned into a national saga the enveloped the team, the school and the community. It was all over the news every single day and was one of the bigger scandals in recent memory.
It took a while for everyone to get past the accusations.
Honorable Mention: Tim Donaghy scandal, Bonds and Steroids, Marion Jones and Steroids
2008: Phelps Sweeps Olympics
9 of 11
Now this was the easiest one to pick.
Michael Phelps took the 2008 Summer Olympics by storm and swept all of his events, winning the most Gold medals ever won in one Olympics. He did it in dominating fashion and became an American hero in the process.
We may never see anything like that again.
Honorable Mention: Giants upset Patriots, Usain Bolt, Phillies win World Series
2009: Tiger Falls From Grace
10 of 11
2009 was not a fun year for Tiger Woods.
It started with a Thanksgiving car accident that spiraled into a huge scandal where multiple affairs came to light and the public turned on the golfer that was loved by almost all of America. It led to a stint in rehab for sex addiction and jokes made at his expense.
Tiger is just now starting to move on from that scandal. What a nightmare.
Honorable Mention: Vick returns to football, Lance Armstrong returns to Tour, Brett Favre joins Vikings
2010: Super Saints
11 of 11
After Katrina hit New Orleans, the Saints were one of the biggest steps in rebuilding the city.
Drew Brees, a quarterback cast out of San Diego and deemed not worth the risk by Miami came to town and threw himself into the community as did the rest of the team. The city loved the team and the team loved the city back.
The Saints reached the mountaintop, beating the Colts in the big game this past February.
Honorable Mention: Tiger returns to golf, Summer of LeBron, Lakers vs. Celtics Game 7
