SEC Fans Have Ruined College Football
Where did it all go wrong?
I just finished watching the Gators romp the Hurricanes, and I'm disgusted. Not because the Gators won, they're a great team. Not because I'm behind in College Football Pickem' either. But because of the noise coming from the fans at The Swamp.
As the final seconds continued to descend on the clock, the Florida faithful began to chant "S-E-C, S-E-C, S-E-C!" I rolled my eyes in disillusion. Why are they chanting this? Am I missing something here? When did the conference your favorite college belongs to become such a vital part of your fanhood? It started with the SEC and its resonance is being felt all over college football and those who cover the game.
I don't like the SEC or SEC fans. They are a rather arrogant and pompous group of people. Hard to believe that a Georgia redneck could be pompous, but it's true. I live in the heart of the SEC and I'm drowning in a sea of team infidelity at the bed of conference love. I live in Georgia for the time being, but I'm a Buckeye born and bred. I love the Scarlet and Gray, and despise the Maize and Blue. I was raised a Wolverine hater.
But in recent years, due to the influence of SEC fans, I often wondered if it would be all right to root for Michigan because they're in the same conference as the Buckeyes. After all, if the conference is good that makes my team that much better, right?
With that said, I must confess and ask forgiveness for my trespasses. I, am Ohio State junkie, rooted for Michigan to beat Florida last year in the Capital One Bowl. I know, I know. I didn't want this cat to get out of the bag, but it must be said to prove my point. It is an utter shame that any fan of any sport would root for their rival just for the sake of the conference or league success. The league you're in doesn't determine the quality of your team, your play on the field determines the quality of your team!
I'm tired of Conference talk in college football. Bring back the days when the team's production in their respected arenas was what really mattered. Let us stop excusing our losses on the premise that you're in a tough conference. The truth is all conference play is tough! The teams have been playing each other in league play for years and they know each other very well. Every league game has the potential for an upset.
Never again will I root for you Michigan. Yes, you're in the Big Ten, but no, you're success doesn't determine Buckeye success. Buckeye success determines Buckeye success. When you lose I will laugh, and when you walk off that field with your heads bowed low, mine will be held high. As college football fans, let us denounce this "my conference is better than your conference" pitter patter and get down to the real reason we watch: OUR TEAMS! Go Bucks!
