Rex Grossman Named Redskins Starter: The 10 Worst QB Performances This Season
Mike Shanahan made the collective football universe scratch its head when he announced that Rex Grossman would start in place of Donovan McNabb in the Redskins' game against Dallas.
Perhaps even more shocking is that following this week, McNabb (career 85.7 QB rating) will be relegated from first to third-string behind Grossman (career 69.9 QB rating) and John Beck (career 62.0 QB rating).
Does Shanahan remember that McNabb just signed a contract extension to stay with the Redskins?
McNabb hasn't been great this season, but he hasn't been awful, either. He has 3,377 passing yards, a 58.3 completion percentage and a 14-15 TD-INT ratio. But that's still better than Grossman has ever been.
This season, Grossman's only attempted seven passes but still managed to fumble the ball in his one game of action.
Apparently, that performance in Week 8 was impressive enough to convince Shanahan that a change needed to be made. Or not. Nobody has any idea what's going on in Washington anymore.
But with Grossman set to make his first start since 2008, the Redskins quarterback may be in for a historically bad performance.
So in honor of Grossman's ineptitude, here are the 10 worst performances by an NFL quarterback this season.
Sam Bradford, Week 4 (QB Rating: 46.1)
1 of 10
Bradford's had a great rookie season, but this is one performance he's going to want to scratch from his memory.
Playing against the Detroit Lions of all teams, Bradford was a mess. He completed 23 of 45 passes for 215 yards, but his efforts were wasted. He threw two interceptions too, including a fourth-quarter mistake that made the score 44-6.
Losing hurts, but losing to the Lions really hurts. Here's hoping Bradford is able to get past this one.
Brett Favre, Week 2 (QB Rating: 44.3)
2 of 10
This is probably right around the time that Vikings fans realized something was wrong and that Minnesota might not be a Super Bowl team after all.
Favre led the Vikings directly into the ground in this one, throwing three interceptions while completing 22 of his 36 attempts. Those 225 passing yards were of little use in a 14-10 beating at the hands of the Miami Dolphins.
Matt Hasselbeck, Week 8 (QB Rating: 44.1)
3 of 10
Hasselbeck's been around for a long time, but he had one of the worst games of his career in a 33-3 loss to the Oakland Raiders.
He attempted 32 passes, but only connected on 13 of them for a paltry 163 yards. Zero touchdowns. One interception. One very forgettable game.
Carson Palmer, Week 12 (QB Rating: 41.0)
4 of 10
If anybody thought that Palmer was still a good quarterback, then this stink bomb should have silenced those remaining delusional fans.
Palmer threw 38 passes, but connected on only 17 of them for a pathetic 135 yards. He threw one early touchdown to give the Bengals a brief lead, but then coughed up two interceptions and got sacked in the end zone to clinch the 26-10 win for the Jets.
Chad Henne, Week 13 (QB Rating: 37.8)
5 of 10
In a game that the Dolphins desperately needed to win, Chad Henne laid a massive egg against the Cleveland Browns.
He completed just half of his 32 passes for 174 yards. Henne did manage to throw one touchdown, but that lone act of talent was more than offset by his three interceptions. The Browns won 13-10 on a last-second field goal.
Jay Cutler, Week 14 (QB Rating: 32.9)
6 of 10
This is what happens when you combine Cutler, a snowstorm and the New England Patriots in one game.
Cutler did nothing against the Patriots, completing just 12 of his 26 passes for 152 yards.
He also threw two interceptions against the NFL's worst pass defense, losing badly to New England 36-7.
Jimmy Clausen, Week 9 (QB Rating: 28.5)
7 of 10
Clausen is probably the worst starting quarterback in the NFL this season, but he was especially bad in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints.
He completed only eight of 18 passes for 47 yards and an interception. No surprise that the Panthers got crushed in that game, 34-3.
Mark Sanchez, Week 13 (QB Rating: 27.8)
8 of 10
Sanchez should probably stay on the ground after what happened in this game—the infamous 45-3 pounding at the hands of the New England Patriots.
Bill Belichick didn't just make Sanchez look mortal, he made Sanchez look like he belonged in a retirement home.
The Jets' "franchise" quarterback completed 17 of 33 passes for 164 yards, and threw three interceptions into the waiting hands of Patriots defenders.
Kyle Orton, Week 14 (QB Rating: 27.1)
9 of 10
Orton was the league's leading passer for most of the season, but he fell hard in this one.
The Broncos quarterback attempted a customary 41 passes but completed only 19 of them for 166 yards.
He also threw three interceptions against a very mediocre Cardinals defense. No wonder the Broncos got embarrassed in this one, losing to Arizona 43-13.
Jason Campbell, Week 7 (QB Rating: 10.7)
10 of 10
The Redskins thought Jason Campbell could be their franchise quarterback when they drafted him in 2005. The Raiders thought Campbell could be their franchise quarterback when they traded for him this offseason.
Umm, about that.
Campbell was unconsciously bad against San Francisco this week. He completed only eight of his 23 passes and only managed to throw for 83 yards.
He added a couple of interceptions as the 49ers got their butts kicked by a team that wasn't particularly good in the first place.
