Joe Webb...Who? Minnesota Vikings Rookie QB To Start Against the Chicago Bears

David DanielsDec 16, 2010

Joe Webb was drafted out of UAB by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Webb isn't your average, immobile, pocket passer, third string quarterback.  Going into the draft, he wasn't even seen as a quarterback.  Experts saw him as a wide receiver at the NFL level.

Never in his wildest dreams did Webb believe he would ever start or even get playing time this season with the "invincible" Brett Favre at quarterback.

Favre will most likely not be able to play again this week with an ankle injury and Tavaris Jackson was put on Injured Reserve today.  That means Webb gets the go.

Again, Joe Webb is no pocket passer.

At Webb's Pro Day, he ran a 4.43 40 yard dash time and recorded a vertical leap of 42.5 inches.  It's impossible to talk about his measurable and not mention his bench press numbers: 21 reps of 225 pounds.

The kid is a freak of nature.

The Chicago Bears have one of the best defenses in the league, but Webb couldn't have gotten a better week to face them.  The Bears are coming off an embarrassing 36-7 loss to the New England Patriots.  For Webb's sake, hopefully the Bears defense is in a depression and not a determined state of mind on Sunday.

Either way, this game is going to be very interesting to see.

The Metrodome has been de-domed and the Vikings third string, rookie quarterback will get his first NFL start.

Don't overlook this young player though.  Defenses often have trouble stopping quarterbacks without significant game film.

On top of that, scrambling quarterbacks open up more holes for running backs because defenses are forced to defend the bootleg (See: combination of Vince Young, Chris Johnson in 2009).  Adrian Peterson is smiling.

The Bears can't get overconfident.  If they travel to Minnesota thinking the Vikings have absolutely no shot, Peterson and Webb will run circles around them.
