Sal Alosi: New York Jets Coach Suspended Indefinitely After New Details Emerge

Patrick ClarkeDec 16, 2010

New York Jets' strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi has since become a household name after he was seen tripping Dolphins' player Nolan Carroll in Sunday's loss to Miami.

Alosi was originally suspended for the rest of the season.

But after the team learned there was more to Alosi's actions then just a momentary lapse of judgement, his suspension was made indefinite.

Accoring to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, the Jets have now found out that Alosi instructed at least five players to stand in a wall on the sideline during Sunday's game prior to his tripping incident.

Alosi's goal was to force the gunner (Nolan Carroll) to run around them on his way down the field.

Alosi was fined $25,000 on Monday and Jets' general manager Mike Tannenbaum said Alosi's suspension will remain indefinite until further review.

However it's not looking good for Sal Alosi.

Jets' tight end Jeff Cumberland was quoted saying "we've been doing that since the beginning of the year, standing right there. Sunday was not the first time that we'd been doing that."

Cumberland also stated that Alosi never mentioned why they needed to stand along the sideline during punt returns.

Other Jets' coaches are calling Alosi's actions a lapse in judgement and special teams coach Mike Westhoff even went so far as to say the New England Patriots do just the same on a radio show this week.

Unfortunately for Westhoff's argument, the Patriots' sideline has never been caught tripping an opposing player during a game.

Still, players have rallied around Sal Alosi. Mark Sanchez and Bart Scott call Alosi a teammate.

Regardless of whether or not they support Alosi though, the Jets surely want to rid themselves of that kind of representation on the sideline.

Firing Alosi is certainly an option for the Jets and maybe the only way to put an end to the circus surrounding the team.
