NFL MVP Watch: Who Will Win? Tom Brady or Michael Vick?

David DanielsDec 16, 2010

Tom Brady v. Michael Vick: who would have thought we'd be having this discussion after Vick went to jail a couple of years ago?

Despite being against all odds, those are, in fact, the two players the MVP race is between this year.

Brady has put on a clinic week after week on how to run the west coast offense.  Vick has silenced any doubters who have said that scrambling quarterbacks are inferior to pocket passers.

The two elite signal callers are matched-up in a very tight MVP race, a race that could turn into a Super Bowl match-up of the New England Patriots v. the Philadelphia Eagles. Who will come out on top?  Here is a comparison of the two players' resumes:

Statistics

Brady and Vick are 1-2 in passer rating in the NFL this season.  Brady boasts a rating of 109.9 while Vick's passer rating is just a little over five points less in 104.3.

In comparing passing yards and touchdowns though, Brady blows Vick away.  He has over 8,000 more passing yards than Vick and 12 more touchdowns on the year.

Now, Vick can say the exact same thing and more with his production on the ground. He has 483 rushing yards compared to Brady's 17.  Vick himself also got into the end zone seven times in 2010.

You also can't forget that Brady has played in more games this season than Vick has. Vick played in three less games, and he wasn't even the Eagles starter to begin the year.

Vick could also argue he got more done with an inferior offensive line compared to New England's.

Victories

Both quarterbacks have carried their teams on their backs for multiple wins this season.

Brady has led the Patriots to a league best 11-2 record.  Believe it or not, Vick actually has a better winning percentage this season.

When Vick has started and played the entire game, the Eagles are 7-1.  That's an 87.5 winning percentage compared to Brady's 84.6.

Obviously that's not enough to sway the vote to either side, most would assume Brady has done more for his team this season in terms of winning, but that's not the case.

Remaining Schedule

The MVP winner will be announced right before the playoffs.  Whoever finishes stronger will win over the voters in a tight race.

The Patriots play Green Bay, at Buffalo, and Miami while the Eagles play at the Giants, Minnesota, and Dallas.

New England has the easier schedule the rest of the way.  Buffalo is an automatic blowout, and the Dolphins playing in the freezing cold of the north east, could end up being dominated even more.

This year, with the Pittsburgh Steelers breathing down their neck for home-field advantage, the Patriots won't be able to coast to the finish line.  Brady's production won't dip in the final weeks to give Vick the edge.

Winner

Tom Brady will win the MVP award in a very close 2010 race.

Vick shouldn't be too disappointed though.  He'll still have a chance to lead his team to Dallas and win the better MVP trophy in February.
