Brett Favre Sits, Streak Comes To a Close: A Look at Iron Man Streaks
Brett Favre is listed as inactive in tonight's impromptu Monday night game against the New York Giants.
In related news, pigs were seen flying through the sky across the United States.
With this news, the NFL's leader in consecutive games played finally sees his streak come to a close.
In honor of this incredible accomplishment, let's take a look at the active and historical Iron Man streaks in America's four major sports.
NFL History: Brett Favre
1 of 8
The streak ends tonight at 321 games played including the playoffs, 297 without.
Brett Favre's first start in the streak came way back on Sep. 27, 1992.
Since then he's overcome countless injuries, multiple retirements, and personal tragedies.
He's sure to be a first ballot Hall of Famer whenever he becomes eligible. The records that Brett Favre holds are innumerable.
NFL Active: Peyton Manning
2 of 8
Now that Favre's steak is over, Peyton Manning inherits the title of current Iron Man in the NFL.
The longtime Indianapolis Colts quarterback has played in 204.
What is really impressive about this streak is that Manning has never missed a game in his entire career, stretching back all the way to his rookie season in 1998.
If anyone will catch Favre, this is the man.
MLB History: Cal Ripken, Jr.
3 of 8
Cal Ripken, Jr. played for the Baltimore Orioles in all 21 of his seasons in the MLB.
It is Ripken that owns the nickname "Iron Man" for his incredible, unsurpassable streak, one of the true unbreakable records in sports.
Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's record with his 2,131st game played on Sep. 6, 1996 when his Orioles took on the California Angels in front of a sold-out home crowd. He even hit a home run in the game.
The streak ended at 2,632 games, spanning the time from May 30, 1982 until Sep. 19, 1998.
MLB Active: Matt Kemp
4 of 8
Through the end of the 2010 season, Los Angeles outfielder Matt Kemp holds the active streak for consecutive games played in the MLB.
Kemp has played in 204 straight games, which seems quite unimpressive after reading about Ripken's streak.
Ichiro Suzuki trails Kemp by a small margin as the Mariner has played in 192 straight.
NBA History: A.C. Green
5 of 8
A.C. Green is the NBA's Iron Man with his streak of 1,192 consecutive games played.
Playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat, Green overcame numerous illnesses and injuries.
Most notably, he recovered from an intentional elbow in the face by the New York Knicks' J.R. Reid by wearing a mask and only playing a couple of minutes per game.
NBA Current: Derek Fisher
6 of 8
On Dec. 8, Andre Miller served a one-game suspension for shoving Blake Griffin and ended his league-leading 632 consecutive games played streak.
That left Derek Fisher in the lead. As of tonight, Fisher has played 436 consecutive games.
The point guard has played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, and Utah Jazz.
NHL History: Doug Jarvis
7 of 8
Doug Jarvis' consecutive games played streak of 964 games broke Garry Unger's previous record of 914.
He played for the Hartford Whalers, Washington Capitals, and Montreal Canadiens during the career which saw him win four Stanley Cups.
Javis' streak lasted from Oct. 8, 1975 to Oct. 10, 1987.
NHL Active: Mark Recchi
8 of 8
Mark Recchi is currently the oldest player in the NHL, the leader in games played, and the consecutive games played leader.
He's played in 1,513 consecutive games now in his lengthy career. Recchi has played for the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Atlanta Thrashers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens.
The Recchin' Ball should keep on rolling through the end of this season.
