Sal Alosi and the 15 Dirtiest Plays in the NFL This Season

Trae ThompsonDec 13, 2010

Sal Alosi may be lucky if he makes it through the week with his job.

The New York Jets strength and conditioning coach is at the center of controversy after tripping Miami cornerback Nolan Carroll in Sunday's 10-6 loss. The NFL is reviewing the incident.

"I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment," Alosi said in a statement. "My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for.

"I spoke to Coach [Tony] Sparano and Nolan Carroll to apologize before they took off. I have also apologized to Woody [Johnson], Mike [Tannenbaum] and Rex [Ryan]. I accept responsibility for my actions as well as any punishment that follows."

The trip is definitely dirty, but is it the dirtiest play of the year? The NFL is cracking down on illegal hits this year, which has cost Pittsburgh's James Harrison. Many who grew up over 20 years ago may say the league has become too soft, while others will say the trip isn't nearly as bad as plays like this.

Let's go for it though. Here's a look at the 15 dirtiest plays of the season.

15. Brett Favre Gets Crushed

1 of 15

On the dirty scale? It's not bad. Arthur Moats makes a great tackle, but you almost feel bad to see an old person get body-slammed to the ground.

14. Harrison Smacks Brees

2 of 15

James Harrison was actually fined $20,000 for this hit on Drew Brees, but it seems pretty tame compared to others he's made.

13. Finnegan Baits Johnson

3 of 15

Cortland Finnegan said he wants to be the league's dirtiest player. Here he baits Andre Johnson, and a brawl erupts between the teams.

12. Hobbs Gets Leveled

4 of 15

Ellis Hobbs left the field on a stretcher. It's a brutal collision, but not near as intentional as other hits you've seen this year.

11. Harrison Decks Cribbs

5 of 15

Josh Cribbs was on the move, and James Harrison just caught him. I didn't think this was as bad as the NFL did. Your thoughts?

10. Ryan Gets Blown Up

6 of 15

Punter Jon Ryan had just gotten a kick off, but that doesn't mean the action was over.

9. Big Ben Busted Up

7 of 15

This was just one of two dirty plays in the most recent game between Pittsburgh and Baltimore. This wasn't nearly as bad since Ben Roethlisberger kept playing.

8. Asante Samuel Brings the Wood

8 of 15

Sure, it was an illegal hit, but there have been some way more violent than this.

7. Harrison Bringing the Pain

9 of 15

Dirty, violent and vicious. James Harrison is way bigger. This looked like Mohamed Massaquoi hit a brick wall at full speed.

6. Heath Miller Gets a Concussion

10 of 15

If you watched last Sunday, then you knew immediately this was straight-up intentional.

5. Meriweather Blasts Todd Heap

11 of 15

It's obvious this wasn't incidental, and you don't even get any protest from Brandon Meriweather about the flag.

4. Smith Goes Below the Belt

12 of 15

Watch the left side of the video and Shaun Smith (No. 90). This story explains how he allegedly grabbed Anthony Davis' privates.

Davis obviously is not too pleased. I wonder why.

3. Suh Gets Violent

13 of 15

You always want defensive players to be aggressive, but it's hard to tell whether defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is trying to tackle Jake Delhomme or decapitate him.

2. Robinson Trying to Injure

14 of 15

No way you can say Dunta Robinson was just trying to make a good stop here. It's obvious he was trying to hurt DeSean Jackson.

1. Watch Your Step

15 of 15

You really can't argue about this. Is there a dirtier play this year you've seen?
