Sal Alosi Aftermath: Do New York Jets Really Want To Be the NFL's Jerks?

Chris TrapassoDec 13, 2010

Sal Alosi has gone from a relatively unknown coach on a struggling New York Jets team to an infamous assistant who has lost respect from just about everyone around the NFL.

Alosi, the head strength and conditioning coach for the Jets, tripped Miami Dolphins rookie cornerback Nolan Carroll after he was pushed out of bounds on punt coverage. Carroll suffered a knee injury and after attention from the trainers, limped off the field.

This is the last thing the Jets need after back-to-back humiliating losses, the most recent coming at home.

Basically the entire Jets team has been talking trash since the summer, and have not shied away from letting the league know they'd be extremely physical to get that extra inch any way possible.

Although some enjoy head coach Rex Ryan's aggressively overconfident nature and bravado that never quits, many others have hated it.

His arrogant persona is what makes him who he is, but he's setting a bad example for his players and obviously for the coaches below him.

We haven't seen such a mindless, immature and obviously illegal move by a coach in quite some time, and it looks horrible when it happens out of frustration during a time when the team is spiraling out of control.

This mindblowing mishap reflects poorly on the Jets and is symbolic of what they've become.

A team that talks-the-talk but recently, can't walk-the-walk.

The Jets can't go easy here. Alosi should at least be suspended without pay for the rest of the year, and should certainly be re-evaluted at season's end.

Being the "jerks" or "villains" of the NFL is a tired act, and when you're losing the way the Jets have of late, it'll get them nowhere.

Instead of boasting in over-confident press conferences, the Jets should narrow their focus, stay quiet and get back to the basics.

That's what got them to where they were heading into this ultra-hyped season, one in which they claimed they were bound for the Super Bowl.

If they don't, they could miss the playoffs altogether.
