St. Louis Rams: 10 WRs That Should Be on the Rams' Radar in 2011
I've put together a list of wide-receivers the Rams should consider come free agency. You may agree with my selections, you may not. Either way, let's discuss all available options.
Happy Holidays!
James Jones
1 of 10
Current team: Green Bay Packers
Age: 26
Height: 6-1
Weight: 208
2010 stats: 40 receptions- 540 yards, 3 touchdowns (13 games played)
Jones has been as consistent as they come for the Packers over the past few seasons. He's willing to lay out over the middle, he can run the reverse effectively and he's always been a guy who gets open in the red zone.
In my opinion Jones is a better version of Brandon Gibson.
Steve Smith
2 of 10
Current team: New York Giants
Age: 25
Height: 5-11
Weight: 194
2010 stats: 47 receptions- 517 yards, 3 touchdowns (8 games)
Those stats may not look like much, but know that Smith has only played in eight games this season. The Rams don't have a speed receiver who can catch a quick screen and take it to the house. Steve Smith's versatility allows him to line up anywhere on the field.
He'd be even more dangerous on the turf at the Eddie Jones Dome.
Julio Jones
3 of 10
Current team: Alabama Crimson Tide
Age: 21
Height: 6-4
Weight: 211
2010 stats: 75 receptions- 1084 yards, 7 touchdowns (12 games played)
Jones set Alabama school records for catches in a season and total yards in 2010. When 100% healthy he's as close to unstoppable as they come. Jones has caught 176 passes in his career without a fumble. #veryimpressed
He would instantly give the Rams credibility at the wide receiver position--which is something they desperately need.
Chad Ochocinco
4 of 10
Current team: Cincinnati Bengals
Age: 32
Height: 6-1
Weight: 192
2010 stats: 65 receptions- 795 yards, 4 touchdowns (13 games played)
Ocho isn't a free agent until 2012 but I strongly believe he can be had for the right price. I'm not sure there's been a more consistent receiver over the years. Does he talk a lot? Yes, of course he does, but he immediately brings a level of confidence and respect to an organization that has struggled to find an identity since the days of Warner, Faulk, Holt and Bruce.
I think a second round pick is enough to get Chad in a Rams sweater. Signing him to a long term deal shouldn't be difficult considering he's played his entire career in god-awful Cincinnati. I see him jumping at a chance to play with Sam Bradford seeing how frustrated he's been with former No 1. pick Carson Palmer.
Jon Baldwin
5 of 10
Current team: Pittsburgh Panthers (Junior)
Age: 21
Height: 6-5
Weight: 225
2010 stats: 52 receptions- 810, 5 touchdowns
As you can see in the photo above, Jon Baldwin is a high-flyer. In his 16 games at Pitt he's caught 127 balls for 2325 yards and 16 touchdowns. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Rams don't have anyone on their current roster that could go back to college and put up those numbers at Pitt.
Per game averages: 8 receptions- 145 yards, 1 touchdown
Baldwin should be available for the Rams wherever they end up.
Sidney Rice
6 of 10
Current team: Minnesota Vikings
Age: 24
Height: 6-4
Weight: 202
2010 stats: 9 receptions- 181 yards, 2 touchdowns (3 games)
2009 stats: 83 receptions- 1312 yards, 8 touchdowns (16 games)
I included Rice's '09 stats because he missed so much time this season with a hip injury. If the Rams can't have Larry Fitzgerald, why not get somebody who plays just like him? Last season he was Brett Favre's go-to target every time a play broke down. Favre's confidence in Rice's ability to find open space should tell us that he's worth having around long term.
Terrell Owens
7 of 10
Current team: Cincinnati Bengals
Age: 37
Height: 6-3
Weight: 224
2010 stats: 72 receptions- 983 yards, 9 touchdowns (13 games played)
The sometimes cancerous Terrell Owens proved himself to be Hall of Fame worthy with his performance this season. He could be the star of the show in St. Louis while mentoring whichever young stud receiver they get in the draft.
Larry Fitzgerald
8 of 10
Current team: Arizona Cardinals
Age: 27
Height: 6-3
Weight: 218
2010 stats: 69 receptions- 861 yards, 5 touchdowns
This may seem like a stretch but here's why it's not: Larry Fitz is under contract with the Cards until 2012, but he hasn't talked about his future in Arizona. With no quarterback in sight, I see no reason Fitzgerald wouldn't want to leave the desert as soon as possible. If Cardinals' management know he isn't likely to resign after the 2011 season, why not listen to trade offers? He's worth a first round pick in my book. Seeing as the Rams will have one, why not try?
Fitzgerald would go down as the greatest receiver in Rams' history.
A.J. Green
9 of 10
Current team: Georgia Bulldogs
Age: 22
Height: 6-4
Weight: 207
2010 stats: 49 receptions- 771 yards, 9 touchdowns (8 games played)
A.J. Green is arguably the best receiver to come out since Calvin Johnson a few years back. He exhibits excellent eye-hand coordination and blazing speed. In my opinion he's the most talented player in college football. If Green were on the Rams' 2010 roster they could've easily won 10 games.
Plaxico Burress
10 of 10
Current team: New York State Penitentiary
Age: 32
Height: 6-5
Weight: 232
I know I'm going to be lambasted for putting Burress on my list, but I don't care. For those who don't think prison is a form of rehabilitation, see Michael Vick. He'll be 33 by the time the 2011 season starts which really isn't that old in the receiver world. And let's not forget the fact that he's been sitting in a cell for two years dying to play football.
Some see him as a criminal, I see him as a man on a mission. The Rams should go after him hard.
