Ohio State Football: End of the Weekend News

1) The Football Writers Association of America named their All-America team (they only name a first team) and Chimdi Chekwa took home more hardware, being selected at cornerback.  However, junior center Michael Brewster (pictured) was also named, and should be positioned to make a run at the Rimington Award next season. Congratulations to both.

2) On the recruiting front in was an interesting weekend for Ohio State, but not overly productive.  First of all, junior college defensive end Tank Carradine, who was scheduled to visit, never showed up, and it looks like he won't be wearing scarlet and gray.  Also, Ohio's Mr. Football, Akise Teague (Youngstown Ursiline), who many hoped would garner an offer from the Buckeyes, must have tired of waiting, and verballed to Cincinnati.  My guess is he hoped his performance in the title game victory over Coldwater would cause OSU to offer, and when he didn't get the love he hoped for, decided to pull the trigger.  Teague's size certainly went against him (5'8", 180), and I would understand that except for the fact that the Bucks have continued to pursue Shane Wynn who is even smaller, and not as good a prospect, in my opinion.  Kind of makes me scratch my head!

3) Speaking of recruiting, one wonders what effect Florida's quick hire of Will Muschamp (former defensive coordiantor at Texas) will have.  It seems Muschamp wasted no time in getting to work, and hosted defensive back Jabari Gorman this weekend.  Gorman is down to Florida, Miami (Fl) and Ohio State, and the Buckeyes hoped to capitalize on the fact that neither of the Florida schools had coaches as of last week.  But that changed, and I am pretty skeptical of Ohio State's chances of getting the Miami native to head north. However, count me as unimpressed by the job Muscamp did at Texas.  He was fiery on the sidelines and put on a good show for television, but his results weren't that great, as Texas never did field a top-notch defense during his tenure..

4) On to the NFL.  It was a huge day for New Orleans Saint (and former Buckeye) Malcolm Jenkins.  He intercepted two passes in the Saints 31-13 victory over the Saint Louis Rams, including taking one 96 yards to the house! In just his second season, Jenkins is a fixture for the defending Super Bowl champs, and it is great to see him enjoy so much success this early in his career.

5) Finally, the Basketball Bucks earned an easy 85-60 victory today over the Western Carolina Catamounts, and didn't need Jared Sullinger to be Superman in the process.  He still scored 17 points, but it was a balanced team effort for the number two ranked hoopsters.  My guess is Thad chewed them pretty good after their less than inspiring win over IUPUI and they responded.  However, unless they develop more depth I doubt they will hold on to their lofty ranking for long.
