Florida Gets Revenge on Cameron Newton

Neil ShulmanDec 12, 2010

I wrote an earlier article saying that maybe it was better for Florida in the long run to have Cam Newton take his talents elsewhere.

That doesn't mean I have any respect for him.

OK, maybe he's a good guy now. Maybe he learned his lesson. I'll concede that's possible.

But whether it was intentional or not, Cam Newton showed only his criminal side at Florida, and only when he went to Auburn did he truly unveil what he's capable of doing.

So now I'm going to rip into him. Except I don't have to—Jeremy Foley already enacted some sweet, sweet revenge.

Sidling up alongside a reporter from the Gainesville Sun, and one from the USA today, Jeremy Foley stood in front a TV with ESPN on. He waited until 8:35, when Cam Newton's life story was being told. Immediately after it began, he ordered the two reporters to spread the word that Will Muschamp had been named new head coach at Florida. Foley was probably anticipating word getting out and hitting the sports world just before Newton received the award.

Although it didn't happen exactly that way, it was close enough. The story was still fresh on the street—about 20 minutes old, ruining the glory of Cam Newton and Auburn.

That alone probably pissed off Auburn. But Florida wasn't done destroying Newton's moment.

At about 9:05, Foley asked Muschamp who he would use as an offensive coordinator. Muschamp replied "Major Applewhite."

Then Muschamp spread the word of that story, too.

Welcome to Florida, Muschamp. I love you already for helping to spoil Newton's (wrongful) glory. Wrongful because, well, you know, he should have had the Heisman year at Florida.

And let's get something clear—Meyer never kicked Newton off the team. Newton left on his own.

Since Florida Offensive Coordinator Steve Addazio (rightfully) drew lots of heat because of his mental retardation, the thought of somebody else calling plays was equally big news in Gainesville.

It's no thought now. It's happening.

But anyway, the two big pieces of breaking news successfully crushed Cam Newton's glory.

I LOVE IT!!!

WAR CAM FIB NEWTON EAGLE.
