NFL Picks Week 14: 7 Coaches That Could Be Fired After Their Next Loss
So far this season, head coaches Wade Phillips, Brad Childress, and the NFL's latest victim, Josh McDaniels, have all been fired.
The Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings had Super Bowl dreams going into the season, but they were crushed faster than you can say "I can't wait until next year."
Wade Phillips was fired solely because of lack of success. Childress was fired for of lack of success and cutting Randy Moss.
McDaniels was fired because of lack of success and Spygate v2.
All of these firings were breaking news: even though people saw them coming, it was still surprising to see them booted in the middle of the season.
What have you done for me lately?
In the NFL, owners don't have the level patience NBA owners possess. You can't just waste a season and wait for free agency to rebuild. It's compete now, or you're out.
Here are seven coaches that could be fired after another disappointing loss:
7. Tony Sparano
1 of 7
This firing is very unlikely. It would take a historic loss for Sparano to be fired after this week.
Rumors of a coaching change for the Dolphins has come up though. At one time, he was the most sought after head coaching candidate in the league; now his job may be in danger.
They've been pretty much eliminated from the playoff race after losing two of their last three games. The two losses included a shutout to the Bears and a three point heart breaker to the Browns.
Never say never.
6. Eric Mangini
2 of 7
For the second straight season, Eric Mangini saved his job by putting together a winning streak late in the season.
This firing is also very unlikely, especially coming off two wins.
It'll need to be a big loss, but a loss to the Buffalo Bills though may be the excuse Mike Holmgren is looking for to fire him.
Holmgren could be looking to take over the job himself, or he could want to get his old friend Jon Gruden to Cleveland before Gruden finds another home.
5. Norv Turner

Last week, the Chargers lost their first game in December since only A.J. Smith knows when.
They were a favorite to sneak into the playoffs and make a big run, but a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs would eliminate any chance of that happening.
Smith didn't have patience for Marty Schottenheimer who couldn't win in the playoffs. Turner won't even get the Chargers to the playoffs this year.
To make matters even worse, the Chargers are in another Cowboys-Vikings situation where they were seen as Super Bowl contenders to begin the season.
4. Jeff Fisher
4 of 7
Ever since the Vince Young-Jeff Fisher clash, the Titans haven't gotten into the end zone.
The signing of Randy Moss brought Super Bowl dreams to Nashville, but they were erased in the blink of an eye.
Fisher is the longest tenured head coach in the NFL. A loss to the Colts in front of the entire nation may be the last straw for a coach that's never won the big one.
3. Mike Singletary
5 of 7
A loss to the Seahawks this week would eliminate any chance the 49ers have of making the playoffs.
They were unanimous favorites to win the NFC West. Mike Singletary was supposed to be part of the 49ers rise back to dominance, but he may turn out to be the scapegoat for a disastrous season.
2. John Fox
6 of 7
The reason why John Fox isn't number one on this list is because he could have been fired weeks ago. The Panthers may just wait until the offseason to fire him.
An ugly loss against Atlanta this week (very likely) at home may eliminate any patience left within the Panthers organization.
If the Carolina isn't dead set in waiting until the off season, this could be John Fox's last week wearing black and blue.
1. Marvin Lewis
7 of 7
“With what we have on paper, if we don’t win the Super Bowl this year, it’s a (expletive) shame.”
That's the kind of expectations Chad Ochocinco had for the Bengals in 2010. They certainly didn't live up to them.
At a pitiful 2-10 and challenging for the first overall pick, a blowout loss to division rival Pittsburgh would be just the fuel needed to fire Marvin Lewis immediately.
