Patriots vs. Jets: AFC East Title for New England, Check. Tom Brady MVP, Check?

David DanielsDec 7, 2010

The end of the New England Patriots dynasty?

Not even close.

The Patriots owned the New York Jets Monday night 45-3.  The slaughter ended the mystery of which team will take home the AFC East crown.

No Richard Seymour, no problem.

No Randy Moss, no problem.

Trading away two annual All-Pros would make most football teams take a step, or two, or three, back.  Not the Patriots, who are now 10-2 and have the best record in the AFC.

The reason the Patriots have been able to overcome their setbacks: The Brady Bunch.

Instead of having the offense revolve around Wes Welker and Randy Moss, touches are spread out to many different playmakers.

This isn't the 16-0 New England offense that's explosive to a historic level.  The Patriots' current offense resembles the squad that won three Super Bowls in four years: execution of the west coast offense to a T.

Rookie tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski have made a significant impact.  The duo has been an enormous upgrade to the inconsistent Benjamin Watson.

Danny Woodhead has turned out to be Wes Welker Jr. coming out of the backfield.  Signed after the Lawrence Maroney trade for the sole purpose of depth, he ended up stepping in for long time third down back stud Kevin Faulk just one week later.  The offense didn't break stride after the switch as Woodhead has been phenomenal.

At one point in the game on Monday, Tom Brady was 13 for 13 in completing passes of 10 yards or less, and that stat could have became more impressive as the game went on.  The Patriots are unstoppable when their offense executes that flawlessly.

On Tom Brady and the MVP award:

It's not how you start the year, but how you finish.  If Brady can continue his dominant play, the kind that was on display against a defense considered to be one of the NFL's best throughout the rest of the season, the MVP award is his.

Now, it's impossible to talk about Monday night's game without giving credit to the Patriots defense.  They held the Jets' talented offense to a measly three points picking off Mark Sanchez three times.

The road to the Super Bowl in the AFC runs through Foxborough.
