UFC 124 Fight Card: What Josh Koscheck Must Do to Defeat Georges St-Pierre

Adam WellsDec 6, 2010

This is the fight that MMA fans have been waiting for a long time to see, and it happens this weekend at UFC 124.

In one corner, you have the UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. He is arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world today. He doesn't just beat his opponents, he destroys them. He hasn't lost a round in over three years.

In the other corner, Josh Koscheck. He is the confident, cocky, brash challenger. He loves to get inside his opponents head, and for those that watched this season of The Ultimate Fighter he did just that against GSP.

He has called out the champion and the city of Montreal, where this event will be held at. He doesn't care whether you like him or not, he is going to make sure that you remember him.

This Saturday, Koscheck will have his work cut out for him. The man that he is going up against isn't just the best welterweight fighter in the world, he is the most dominant fighter in UFC today. One of the greatest pure fighters to ever step foot inside the Octagon.

Koscheck knows all this and he uses the mind games to try and neutralize some of GSP's talents. By getting in his head he thinks it will cause GSP to make a mistake and open up an opportunity for him to attack.

In this fight, for Koscheck to win he must rattle the champion. He needs to come out and unleash a smart, attacking style of fighting. He needs to wait for GSP to do something, whether it's a takedown, a punch, whatever. He needs to find the smallest opening that he can find and take advantage of it.

If he can find that opening he will have a great chance to win this fight.

His fighting game has evolved by leaps and bounds since these two men first fought in 2007. Back then he was just a wrestler, a great takedown artist who wasn't particularly strong in any other area.

Now he is a very good striker and his submission game has evolved to the point where it can become a strength. He will need to use all the skills that he has learned in the last three years to go along with his strong wrestling background to have a chance in this fight.

Koscheck can win this fight, a lot of things will have to go his way in order for him to do so. It's going to be interesting to see what kind of tactics he brings to begin the fight. The opening round will tell us what we need to know to determine if he is going to be able to challenge the champion.
