With Randy Couture Returning, The UFC Heavyweight Division Got Interesting Again

Jessy MorrisSep 3, 2008

FINALLY!

The contract complications between the UFC and Randy Couture are over and "The Natural" has signed a three-fight contract with the UFC.

Randy won the UFC Heavyweight Title from Tim Sylvia before the contract problems and Randy has always been recognized as such even during all the bullshit between him and the UFC.

Now that Randy's back, he is scheduled to defend the UFC heavyweight title against Brock Lesnar, and the UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Minautoro Nogueira was scheduled to fight Frank Mir for the interim title, but even with the announcement of the Lesnar/Couture fight, the Mir/Nogueira fight is still on, but let's analyze Couture/Lesnar first.

I'm really happy Randy is back and any fighter who would return at 45 years old would be crazy, but not Randy.  He's not Captain America for nothing.

The decision to actually give Brock Lesnar the title shot makes me scratch my head a little because I don't feel Lesnar is ready yet. He has three MMA fights so far, with only two of them being in the UFC and his record is 1-1 in the UFC.

Sure he was impressive before losing to Mir, and,, yes he destroyed Herring, but it's Couture we're talking about here.

Don't get me wrong, if you read my other articles, you will find out I'm a huge WWE fan, and, of course, a huge Lesnar fan, but I still think he needs more big wins in the UFC before a title shot.

I also thought about it, and I have heard people saying how Lesnar is not at Couture's level, but Brock Lesnar may have better chances of winning than alot of people think.

Couture will do what he does best, take Lesnar down and ground and pound but Lesnar may just be too strong to stay down, and Couture doesn't have the punching power to KO Lesnar and I doubt he goes for submissions after submissions.

So, if Brock Lesnar can take couture down and keep him there like he did with Herring, Lesnar can pull it off.

Hopefully, Randy didn't waste too much time in court and filming the Scorpion King 2 that he forgot to train. Anyway, can't wait to see that fight at UFC 91.

Another fight that has been scheduled ever since both men were announced as the trainers on The Ultimate Fighter: Season 8 is UFC interim heavyweight champion Minautoro Nogueira vs Frank Mir.

This will be a great battle of submission skills, Mir has some of the best submissions in the UFC now the question that needs to be answered is, does he have better submissions than "Big Nog"?

We will see. It was recently announced that after the big UFC 91 main event between Lesnar and Couture, at UFC 92, the main event would be Frank Mir vs Minautoro.

The logical thing to do would have been Couture vs Nogueira, but since Mir was already scheduled to fight Minautoro, it would have been really crappy to take that title shot away from Mir, who, by the way, deserves that title shot.

So, since these two were already taken, Dana needed another worthy heavyweight to take on Couture.  Now everybody knows the heavyweight division is the crappiest division in the UFC right now, so other than Verdum, Gonzaga and maybe Kongo, nobody deserves that title shot more than Brock Lesnar.

With that said, Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar for the UFC heavyweight title and Antonio Minautoro Nogueira vs Frank Mir for the interim UFC heavyweight title will be awesome especially considering that the winners of both fights will collide in a Champion vs Champion fight in the future—interesting, isn't it?

With those three fights already confirmed, is it just me, or has the heavyweight division just got interesting again? Now let's start predicting who will fight in the Champion vs. Champion fight?
