Mike Singletary, Marvin Lewis and Other NFL Coaches on the Hot Seat

The Denver Broncos fired their head coach, Josh McDaniels, on Monday after the team's third consecutive loss. The only good news for McDaniels is that the move spared him from being included on this list.

McDaniels joined former Dallas Cowboys' head coach, Wade Phillips, and former Minnesota Vikings head coach, Brad Childress, as the only three coaches to be fired this season.

But they are by no means the last. Here's a look at the other NFL coaches who may have their necks on the line this week.

Eric Mangini, Cleveland Browns

From one Bill Belichick disciple to the next, Mangini may be the next head coach to lose his job if he doesn't right the ship in Cleveland.

The Browns are a disappointing 5-7 this season after finishing 5-11 in 2009. The inconsistencies that plague a talented young team are being blamed on Mangini, who may not get the chance to come back in 2011 for his third season.

Cleveland has beaten great teams like New Orleans and New England, but then turned around and lost the next week to a team like Jacksonville.

The Browns likely have to win their remaining four games for Mangini to keep his job, a tall task considering both Pittsburgh and Baltimore remain on the schedule.

Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers under Singletary finished the 2009 season with an 8-8 record. Yet, in 2010 they have already lost eight games despite playing in the weakest division in NFL history. How does that happen?

It may not be Singletary's fault that neither Alex Smith nor Troy Smith are starting-caliber quarterbacks. But it is mot certainly Singletary's fault that Michael Crabtree (41 receptions) and Vernon Davis (44 receptions) are so under-utilized despite San Francisco's ability to create a mismatch against any defense.

Singletary needs a miracle to keep his job, like actually making the playoffs. That may still be possible with three divisional games remaining, but the 49ers will need to find a way to beat the San Diego Chargers too.

Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals

INDIANAPOLIS - NOVEMBER 14: Marvin Lewis the Head Coach of the Cincinnati Bengals gives instructions to his team during the Bengals 23-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL game at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 14, 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Marvin Lewis has been the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals since 2003 and in that timespan he has a 58-63-1 record. The Bengals have twice won the AFC North, including last season, but have never made it past the Wild-Card round of the playoffs.

So it's some wonder that Lewis held on to his job as long as he has, though he was the NFL Coach of the Year in 2009. Then he was lucky enough to convince Terrell Owens to team up with Chad Ochocinco to form the best wide receiver duo in the NFL.

It's amazing, then, that the Bengals are today one of the worst teams in the NFL. Cincinnati has a 2-10 record and has lost nine straight, with no end in sight. The Bengals' remaining opponents are Pittsburgh, Cleveland, San Diego and Baltimore.

Lewis is in the final year of his contract and it's unlikely that the Bengals will bring him back for another season, if he's not fired first that is.

John Fox, Carolina Panthers

Like Lewis, John Fox has been a head coach for a long time and is in the final year of his contract. In nine seasons with the Panthers, Fox has compiled a 72-68 regular season record and a 5-3 playoff record.

But the Panthers haven't been good since 2008 when they won the NFC South, and now they are just plain awful. At 1-11 Carolina has the worst record in the NFL and will almost certainly be awarded the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

The Panthers have an embarassingly bad team and Fox has been unable to find a serviceable quarterback since Jake Delhomme stopped being good about seven years ago. Now, Carolina has to start all over again. And there's almost no way Fox will be back to help the team rebuild.

Gary Kubiak, Houston Texans

The Texans were a popular pick as a Wild Card team in the AFC prior to the start of the 2010-11 season. They became an even more popular team after defeating the Indianapolis Colts 34-24 in the first week of the season.

But after that everything went quickly down hill and the Texans now sit at 5-7 and in last place in the winnable AFC South.

Kubiak is a good coach and has a 36-40 record in almost four whole seasons. But he's going to take a lot of the blame for Houston's disappointing season, especially after finishing 9-7 last year and signing a contract extension through 2012.

The Texans have a terrific offense with the trio of Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson and Arian Foster. But Kubiak has failed to install a defense to match the offensive firepower and, as a result, it looks like his days are numbered.

Houston needs to win out to challenge for a playoff spot, and has Baltimore, Tennessee, Denver and Jacksonville remaining on the schedule. Doesn't look good for Kubiak.
