Auburn's Debut of "Spread Eagle" Offense Not What Fans Wanted
Say what you will about the outcome of Auburn's 34-0 blowout win over La-Monroe, Who! La-Monroe, the 2007 Warhawks team that shocked the 'Bama nation for a 21-14 win in T-town. Auburn did what they set out to do, "win the game!"
Was it expected? Sure it was.
Did Auburn do it in dominating fashion? Yes they did.
So whats the problem?
The running game, special teams or the defense? No! The passing game.
Neither Kodi Burns or Chris Todd could create any type of consistent passing attack the entire game. As frustrating to watch in the confines of Jordan-Hare stadium as it was, I found myself waiting with great anticipation for the explosion too happen.
Chirp! Chirp! Chirp! Nope...nothing but crickets.
What I did hear were a small smidgen of boos echoing around the near capacity stadium. Shame on you boo birds, have you not learned your lesson, i.e.: Brandon Cox?
As bad as the passing attack was, or lack thereof, I realized that the defense was absolutely terrifyingly good, special teams were, shall we say, very special. Overall, I was pleased with the outcome.
Did I want the Tigers to come out throwing the ball all over the place like bombs dropping on Saddam Hussein's palaces in Iraq? Heck yeah! Am I about to jump off the bandwagon that my parents so graciously threw me upon in the winter of 1969? Heck no!
I am what you would call a "lifer", so pardon me (excuse the pun) if I actually learned something from this monumental dud of a passing game. What's that you ask? For all the flack from the naysayers about Auburn's new spread attack, including some in the Auburn family, the Tigers can still run the ball.
Throw out all the what ifs, and buts; 325 yards rushing and a shut out on any team this day and time is nothing more than outstanding.
What are you surprised about really? We all knew this offense would take a little time. All we have heard from the people in the know was that the defense and special teams would have to carry the offense until the QB's got going.
Loosen up Auburn family the season is long and this is when the team needs us the most. They need your support, so lets pack Jordan-Hare stadium in on Saturday when the Tigers play Southern Miss at 11:30 am CST.
What are the real issues here? Do we no longer trust our head coach? Well I guess some of you don't or you would not be griping about last Saturday's dominating win. 34-0 enough said...
