Auburn vs. Oregon Football: The Matchup No One Saw Coming

Sal DeRoseDec 4, 2010

So it looks official: the Oregon Ducks will face off against the Auburn Tigers for this year's national title.

Auburn is led by Heisman hopeful Cam Newton, a quarterback who has faced scrutiny on illegal contact with Mississippi State University. On the other hand, Oregon is led by another Heisman hopeful, speedy running back LaMichael James.

Both teams have had impressive seasons led by two spectacular players. Both teams are considerably the best in the bunch. No one can dispute this year's national finalists as no one deserves it more than them.

Oregon has faced a tough road to get to this point. Playing teams like Stanford, USC and Arizona. Oregon has created the fastest offense in the entire NCAA with quick no-huddle plays being called in from the sideline. It seems the only way to shut these Ducks is to do the Cal plan: fall down and fake an injury.

The argument here is that Auburn played an tougher schedule then Oregon. Auburn has faced off against the likes of Alabama, Arkansas, LSU and South Carolina (twice).

Now it comes down to this: Who will be able to stop their opponent? Will Auburn be able to slow down the quickest offense in the nation? Will Oregon be able to stop Newton?

The answer is an Auburn Tigers victory at the end of the day. Oregon will keep it as close as possible. With James, anything is possible. But you can also say that with Newton.

James this season has rushed for 1,548 yards and 19 touchdowns. Newton has passed for 2,254 yards and 24 touchdowns this year. Guess what else? Newton is also his team's leading rusher with 1,336 yards and 18 touchdowns.

But it isn't just about these players. Team-wise, Auburn looks more dominant. The Tigers have defeated better teams and played excellent football against them. Their defensive stats won't show you anything. Auburn has had a much tougher schedule and has played one extra game to get ready for the national title.

This SEC team is loaded from head to toe and if Cam Newton can go off like he did tonight against South Carolina, it will prove that Auburn is the team to beat, not Oregon.

Don't get me wrong; Oregon has had a great season but the Ducks haven't faced competition like Auburn. Look for the Tigers to be holding the trophy at the end of the season on January 10th in Glendale, Arizona.
