In an Eggshell: The End of the NFL

Mike FranklinDec 4, 2010

Will this be the end of the most successful sports franchise in the nation? It is almost unimaginable but...there it is. With each passing hour, the NFL is looking more and more like the golden goose that cracked its own egg and then committed suicide out of spite.

Of course, we can talk strike/lockout all day long without ever mentioning the end of the league. And you can be sure that’s exactly the way it will be approached by the major sports media. But that is for your benefit because the prospects are much worse than that.

Right off the top, the NFL is saying that because of new stadiums and the cost of installing that waste of broadcast bandwidth, the NFL Network, they cannot afford to keep the current 59.6 percent revenue share with the players.

Then on the other side of the coin, there are those poor, poor players...many of whom depend on food stamps to feed their hungry bodies. Not. Not. Not.

So, let's be frank; the common denominator here is greed.

It is like there are these two huge black holes, each threatening to destroy the other by force of an irresistible vacuum that could suck old Refrigerator Perry through a drinking straw.

And speaking of perfect vacuums, there’s not a lot going on under the rugs on either side here because, if there was the smallest thought about what they were doing, they’d play the game for whatever the public was willing to offer. But this is an empty stadium.

That’s right. The economy is tanked, the treasury is bankrupt, congress just refused to help millions of unemployed with extended benefits here at the holidays and...these guys are talking to America about a strike/lockout?

What stones it must take to expose that degree of greed in this kind of economic climate!

And so again, yes, this may well be the end of the NFL because, if this is the product they are trying to sell to the public, then our only message should be for both of them to go ahead and hit the road...and don’t let the screen door smack them on their delicate derrières on the way out.
