Top 10 Reasons the NFL Is Better Than College Football

Ari HoringSep 2, 2008

I couldn’t help but notice how many people agreed with an article I recently read where someone listed the 10 reasons college football is better than the NFL.

The writer made some good points, but none of them really had to do with the rules of the games and how it’s played.

College football might have its rivalries, its marching bands, and its fight songs, but the actual NFL games, seasons, and players are better.

I couldn’t allow one side of the story to be told.

Here are my top 10 reasons the NFL is better than College Football:

10. If an NFL team loses a game or two at the beginning of their season, their season isn’t over yet.

If an NFL team has a bad start to their season, they can still rebound and win a championship. But if a college team has a bad start, it's impossible for them to win a championship.

9. NFL players mean a lot more to their fans than college football players.

In college football, there are no equivalents to Brett Favre or John Elway. Certain NFL players play for so many years in one city that they become more than just superstars; they become icons.

8. In the NFL, it is more about the players than the coaches.

The media treats college coaches like they’re GODS. The people who should be getting the most attention are the people wearing the pads and helmets on the field.

7. You actually have to be athletic enough to get both feet in bounds when making a catch in the NFL.

How can it possibly be a catch if you can’t get both feet down in bounds?

6. The games don’t take forever in the NFL.

In the NFL, the games actually last a reasonable amount of time.

5. In college football there is no such thing as a low-scoring, defensive game.

In the NCAA, a great offense always beats a great defense. But in the NFL that’s not always the case. Real football is about hard-nosed defense. Scores shouldn’t be as high as the usual 45-35 scores we see in college.

4. There are no cupcake games in the NFL.

In the NFL there are no easy games. On any day any team could lose. When a Division-I FBS college team schedules a game against a Division-I FCS team, the outcome of the game is predictable.

3. The same teams don’t always win the championship in the NFL.

In the NFL, you never know who's going to win the Super Bowl.

Did anyone think the Rams would win the Super Bowl in 1999, or the Ravens in 2000? What about the Patriots' victory in 2001?

When is the last time a team that most people thought had no chance won an NCAA championship?

2. NFL players are the best in the world.

In the NFL, when a player like Adrian Peterson does something incredible, we know how legitimate it is because he is doing it against the best.

The players are not only better football players, but the championship team can actually call themselves the champions of the world.

1. Teams don’t get voted into the Super Bowl

The NFL playoffs are one of the most exciting things to watch, and college doesn't have that.

Without playoffs, an underdog like the Giants beating the Patriots last year would not be possible. It’s one thing to know how to win in the regular season, but during the playoffs is when the real winners show up.

However, in college football we never get to find out who those people are. Why on earth should a computer tell me who should be in a championship game?
