Manchester City a force to be reckoned with?
I am guessing I was not the only one who was left completely gobsmacked when the transfer window finally was pacified till January 1st.
Manchester City...the team who only two seasons ago created a new record for scoring the least amount of goals at home in a season, the grand total of ten folks! With the prolific Georgios Samaras leading the line. Fast forward to 1st September 2008 and the blues outbid (that is right OUTBID) superpower Chelsea FC to the signing of Brazilian Robinho. People would not be blamed for pinching themselves just to see if all that happened yesterday was actually a dream.

The exciting thing for city fans is that there are plans to improve an already decent squad with talent equal and even better than Robinho. Rumours of a proposed £135 million deal for Ronaldo and also bids for Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas. Boy do they want to make a statement! though whether any of these deals are a success is another thing entirely. But it shows the clubs intent, which is that they are financial giants who can outbid the biggest clubs to get what they want. This Undoubtedly will lure more top players to Eastlands.
It is exciting for the premier league because finally those that felt the league was becoming rather too complacent, with the top four always finishing in the top four, feel that another team can match and even out muscle these teams. Though the news is not completely positive, certainly not all clubs are blessed with billionaire owners, clubs will have to compete regardless which will lure them to sign players they simply just cannot afford thus deal with the harsh consequences later when huge amount of debt mount resulting in an increase to ticket prices for fans.
The thought of Elano, Jo and Robinho leading the the attack for City is mouth watering prospect with city fans dreaming of samba football. But let us remember that there are other very good teams out there which hope to hinder the chances of Manchester city gaining fourth place. Aston Villa, Tottenham and obviously the members of the top four all have quality squad which some might argue are streets better than the current city sqaud. Also what makes you think Robinho will automatically set the premier league alight? The English Premier league is much different from La Liga and the fans will quickly let a player know their feelings felt.
The aim of Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, the man who heads Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Limited that have taken over Manchester City, is for City to gain a Champions League position this season, win the premier league next season, oh and if its not a problem win the champions league the season after. So no pressure Mark Hughes!, this man clearly is very ambitious and seems like he is willing to buy any player that will make this happen which is why he claimed he will buy MINIMUM of 18 players.
Time will tell whether City become like Chelsea who are a genuine financial force in football. What is clear though is that they have a serious amount of money, and in football money goes a very long way..
