Kansas City Chiefs vs. Denver Broncos: Game Preview and Prediction

Bill RobbinsNov 30, 2010

The Kansas City Chiefs come into Week 13 of the NFL season riding a two-game winning streak and are currently in sole possession of first place in the AFC West.

On the other side, the Denver Broncos will come limping into Arrowhead Stadium for a rematch against the rival Chiefs on a two-game losing streak. They likely are just trying to fight their way out of the AFC West cellar.

The last time these two teams met, Denver won going away by a score of 49-29. The Broncos were coming off of their bye week prior to that game and were very fresh and ready for the Chiefs that day.

The Chiefs hope that they just caught the Broncos at the wrong time and that this weekend they will be able to right the ship against a team that will be looking to play the role of spoiler for the Chiefs' playoffs hopes.

Now, let's taker a closer look and break down the two teams that will be duking it out at high noon this Sunday.

Kansas City boasts the league's best rushing attack, as they average around 174 yards on the ground, which is also 26 yards more than the second best rushing team, the Miami Dolphins.

Meanwhile, stopping the run is not something that the Broncos do well, as they are ranked 30th in the league in this category coming into play Sunday.

As for KC's passing game, it has transitioned from a complement to the running game into the overall strength of the offense.

Chiefs QB Matt Cassel has been on fire of late, as he has thrown for a combined 895 yards and 10 touchdowns over his last three games.

Most of those yards and TDs went to red-hot wide-out Dwayne Bowe, who is enjoying a Pro Bowl-caliber season with 885 yards and 14 TD grabs to go along with a seven-game streak of scoring at least one touchdown.

If the Chiefs offense is able to launch a strong aerial attack against a banged-up Denver secondary, KC will be hard to stop with their dominant running game already in play.

Add in the fact that corner back Andre Goodman and Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins will be sidelined for this game, and it has the possibility of turning ugly for the Broncos pass defense.

However, the Broncos offense is one of the better units in the league, averaging 367 total yards a game to go along with 288 pass yards, which put them at eighth and fourth in the NFL, respectively.

KC did have all kinds of problems against Denver QB Kyle Orton and the up-tempo downfield passing game that they exerted on the Chiefs when the two teams met in Denver in Week 10.

The Chiefs secondary has been known to make a few big mistakes so far this season, and there is little doubt that Orton will be testing them time and time again this weekend.

After all, the Broncos are a pass-happy offense, as they have thrown the ball over 100 more times than the Chiefs have while they have only one running back that has rushed for over 100 yards total this season, Knowshon Moreno with his 472 rushing yards.

With Denver's nonexistent rushing attack, the Chiefs can drop more guys into coverage, forcing the Broncos to beat Kansas City with their ground game.

Kansas City should also have a large home-field advantage considering they will be playing in arguably the toughest place to play in the NFL, and you can bet that the Arrowhead fans are going to be wild come Sunday.

Also, the Chiefs are trying to remain unbeaten at home and will be very fired up to play against a team that took them to the woodshed three weeks ago.

Overall, I believe that the Broncos will put up a fight with Orton and their passing game, but in the end the Chiefs are going to be just too much for them at home.

Prediction: Chiefs-34  Broncos-17
