Reutimann — You Da Man!

Mary Jo BuchananSep 1, 2008

David Reutimann had one of the greatest finishes of his Cup career, coming in ninth place in the Pepsi 500 at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California this past weekend. This was his second top ten finish of his career.

One of Michael Waltrip Racing's most affable drivers, Reutimann apparently enjoys racing at the California track. The first time he raced there in the Nationwide series, he qualified in the fourth starting spot. He actually won the pole there in one of the Craftsman Truck series races.

Reutimann qualified well this race weekend, starting in the twelfth position. He quickly marched forward and remained in the top ten for most of the race.

Ryan Pemberton, Reutimann's crew chief, did a stellar job of keeping up with the track and keeping his driver up on the wheel. Pemberton made a gutsy call, taking two tires late in the race, which even gave the driver of the number 44 Toyota a chance to lead three laps.

Reutimann flexed his muscles at California, but also did so in the previous Cup race at Bristol. There he again qualified well and started on the front row for the race.  David now seems to be on a roll, something sorely needed by the MWR team this season.

Not only does Reutimann want to succeed for the remaining races in 2008, but he had another important motivator this past weekend. David was racing the number 44 UPS/Toys for Tots Literacy Program car.

This special paint scheme was designed to call attention to the need for children to read.

UPS stores were taking donated books to pass along to children to encourage this important learning habit. Reutimann not only advertised this special giving opportunity on the car, but also auctioned off his helmet after the race to benefit the campaign.

So, David Reutimann, while you might not be in the Chase, you certainly are the man.   Congratulations on your charitable work, as well as your great finish this race weekend.
