Manny Pacquiao Could Make as Much as $70 Million in a Mayweather Fight

Leo ReyesNov 30, 2010

If Manny Pacquiao were to choose his next opponent, it would surely be Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Not because Pacquiao thinks Mayweather is easier to beat than Shane Mosley or Juan Manuel Marquez but a Mayweather fight will give him more financial reward than anyone of the two popular contenders.

In a Mayweather fight, Pacquiao will most likely get a guaranteed purse of $50 million plus a pay-per-view revenue share of at least $20 million or a total of at least $70 million.

A Pacquiao-Mayweather fight is expected to break the highest pay-per-view sales record established by Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, Jr in May 2007 which recorded a 2.4 million buys.

Former Ilocos Sur governor Luis "Chavit" Singson, a close ally of Pacquiao, told reporters during a star-studded victory party he hosted Monday night for the Filipino pound-for-pound king in his home at Corinthian Gardens that a fight with Mayweather will probably enable Pacquiao to earn as much as $70 million (about P3.01 billion).

Singson however is not sure if Mayweather will agree to face Pacquiao. He said Mayweather is scared and he knows it is Pacquiao who will give him his first defeat.

If Mayweather fails to fight Pacquiao next year, the best alternatives are Mosley and Marquez, Singson added.

But Singson wants to see Pacquiao squares off with Mayweather and if he wins, he said he can finally retire.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said he has narrowed down his choices for Manny Pacquiao's next opponent to Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Andre Berto. He ranked Mosley as his first choice, followed by Juan Manuel Marquez.

Bob Arum said Andre Berto is a long shot as he is still unpopular and  is therefore hard to sell.

Arum earlier said he asked his son-in-law, Todd du Boef to gent in touch with Mayweather to find out if a deal can be made.

But Arum said Top Rank hasn’t been able to contact Mayweather, who has a Jan. 24 preliminary hearing in Las Vegas regarding domestic violence charges against him. He could face 34 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

It was learned Mayweather was in South Florida over the weekend according to Don King, Obviously the undefeated boxer was looking at the possibility of having Don King as his lead promoter for a possible negotiations with Top Rank in connection with the proposed Pacquiao-Mayweather match next year.

Don King did not want to discuss his meeting with the undefeated boxer because he doesn’t have a deal with Mayweather yet.
