Holiday Weekend Recap: What You May Have Missed This Weekend
It felt like it lasted for 3 weeks, but Thanksgiving weekend is over. We all gained about ten pounds and said goodbye to friends going back to school or back home. There’s not much worse than going to work on Monday.
Today is also the day where you decide whether to go back to the gym or just make it a New Years’ resolution to come. Either way, good luck with that. I went to the gym today, it had been a while so of course I forget my Ipod. That’s about the only thing worse than going to the gym after Thanksgiving weekend. No matter what gym I go to, whenever I don’t have my Ipod and have to listen to the music they play, it always feels like I’m working out in the middle of a rave, and someone is going to offer me some kind of illegal substance.
Today is also the start of 4 straight weeks of Christmas music and most are getting towards the end of having a turkey sandwich for lunch for a long while. Whatever you did, I hope you had a fun and safe weekend. When I woke up this morning I saw a highlight of the best interception I have ever seen, and figured I had to have missed plenty of other stuff this weekend…
Steve Johnson dropped a game-winner, not to mention four other balls, in a loss against the Steelers yesterday. After the game he is in tears, saying that he will never get over it. Then he blames God on Twitter, saying that he praises him 24/7, and how could he do this to him? Maybe God was testing your faith, and guess what, you failed. All this in a weekend that we are all supposed to give thanks for everything. I just have one question for you…why so serious???
Some great college football games, including two I turned off at halftime. Auburn somehow came back to beat Alabama on the road and Boise State gives up a BCS bid and a possible national championship in a heartbreaking defeat in Nevada. You can give the Heisman Trophy to Cam Newton right now, that way he can have it for a little while longer before he is forced to give it back.
In case you haven’t seen any college hoops this year, there’s Duke and 345 other college basketball teams.
Derek Jeter is asking for 150 million on a deal that will end when he is 42 years old…let’s just move on.
We saw one of the best fights in any sport other than hockey. Andre Johnson actually connected of his punches…remember when Carmelo Anthony swung and missed against a Knicks player a few years ago, he got a 15-game suspension. Andre Johnson connects on two punches and no suspension, plus he got the game ball. Hmm….
The Miami Heat continue to struggle against good teams, plus LeBron James gave his coach “the bump” which is equal to the kiss of death in the NBA. Pat Riley is coming. Amare Stoudemire admitted that he was never taught how to play defense, not in high school or when he came into the NBA. His current coach is Mike D’Antoni, the same coach he had when he came into the league. Nice. He’s making 16 million dollars a year, working on how to play defense sounds like something you can do in the summer, no?
Bad weekends for people other than the guy who had way too much to drink this weekend… Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman, one of the highest-scoring kickers in college football history, missed a 26-yard game-winning kick and a 29-yard kick in overtime. Too bad it came down to that. Imagine walking through campus, everywhere he goes there is going to be some kind of whispers. To get past this he should come out and say "Were those goal posts regulation size or what?" Always ways when you make fun of yourself.
The university with the worst weekend? The California Golden Bears. They started off the weekend with a nice basketball win over then-20th ranked Temple, who happened to shoot 33 percent from the field and 10 percent from the 3-point line. You should win against any team that shoots that poorly.
The next game? They score five points in an entire half! Five! These are Division 1 scholarship players in a major conference, and you score five points, including a nine-minute scoreless stretch. The football team loses on a last-second run to end their bowl eligibility, and then the Bears' basketball team comes back out on Sunday and loses by 22 points to a team that recently lost to Yale. Pretty bad three-day run.
To put a cap on this weekend, we get Monday Night Football with two teams battling to remain one game back of a division lead at 4-7. Great night to catch up on some sleep.
