Drew Brees Says Saints Best Be(Ware) of DeMarcus Who Wreaked Havoc One Year Ago

Randy SavoieNov 24, 2010

The intangibles seem to favor the Dallas Cowboys.

After all, they are the home team and home teams win well over 60% of the time on NFL Thursdays.

With Wednesday being a travel day, the Saints will have little time to implement what they've learned about those Cowboys on the practice field.

And, Dallas seems to have new life in the past two weeks under former Saints QB and new interim head coach Jason Garrett.

However as FOX analyst and former Baltimore Ravens boss Brian Billick said Wednesday morning on ESPN Radio, these New Orleans Saints are starting to look scary and that is without Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas, Jeremy Shockey and Darren Sharper in the line-up.

Imagine how good they will be when all four are back to good health.

Reggie's 4-6 week injury has somehow turned into eight weeks but it would be a major disappointment if he does not play this week.

Pierre Thomas is a mystery as his ailment keeps lingering.

Shockey is on the road to being rendered dispensable the way rookie Jimmy Graham is playing of late.

While, the Saints need Sharper back ASAP for his ability to make plays on the ball.

Saints QB Drew Brees told WWL Radio's Bobby Hebert on Tuesday night that falling behind the Cowboys 24-3 in the fourth quarter last year put his offensive tackles in an impossible situation.

"Obviously those (Cowboys) defensive linemen pinned their ears back and rushed the passer and that can be pretty difficult on our offensive tackle (Jermon Bushrod) because you're out there on an island with one of the best pass rushers in the league in DeMarcus Ware," said Brees.

Brees says the Saints appreciate just how gifted a player Ware is and have installed special protection packages for both base and nickel coverages.

In spite of Dallas' disappointing season, Ware still has  8 1/2 sacks and 7 tackles for losses and the Cowboys have no shortage of guys who can rush the passer including Anthony Spencer and Jay Ratliff.

Ware and Spencer wreaked havoc on the Saints one year ago on a Saturday night in New Orleans. It was Saints first loss of the year on the way to the Super Bowl.

"It's really about being good on first and second down and not getting yourself in third-and-long situations," said Brees on WWL Tuesday night. "You don't want to get into obvious pass downs and have those guys pin their ears back,. It's a matter of being balanced, running the football and possessing the ball as much as we can."

NFL veteran Jon Kitna has replaced the injured Tony Romo at quarterback and has been just what the doctor ordered in the past two weeks for the Cowboys according to NFL scout Chris Landry.

Landry told Hebert Wednesday night, "I think Kitna is the ideal backup quarterback. He is experienced. He's smart. He doesn't need a lot of repetitions to be able to jump in there and finish a game or takeover for a stretch which he's been asked to do with Romo being out."

"They're more efficient and more disciplined and more organized as a team the past couple of weeks and Kitna is the perfect example of that," said Landry.

"He really manges a game well. He keeps them out of harm's way. They stay on schedule offensively. They've been able to make enough big plays. And they've not made the killer mistake and that has allowed (the Cowboys) to win some games."
