A.J. Burnett : One of the few bright spots of this season

Brandon WarnesAug 30, 2008

A.J. Burnett, what a difference a year makes.

Burnett had signed on with the Jays getting some big years and big money. He has two years left on his contract as option years if he decides to return, but it didn't start out rosey for Burnett in Toronto.

Injuries in both 2006 and 2007 caused Burnett to start fewer games. Also in both 2006 and 2007 he had very similar years netting 10 and eight wins each season respectively. Those numbers compared to other No. 2 starters were not too impressive.

Enter 2008 and what a season Burnett has had. He currently has 16 wins and nine losses, 193 strikeouts and an ERA of 4.48 and is on pace for 19 wins, 12 losses and 232 strikeouts. While the Jays appeared to be having ups and downs throughout the season Burnett has been very consistent each start.

At training camp many fans were worried that he would be worse than last year after injuring his curve ball finger. That wasn't the case as he has blown through the competition causing several to swing and miss and his curve ball has been top notch.

Aside from Halladay, Burnett has been the best starter for the Jays this season. Where it's gets interesting is the contract with Burnett. He does have two years left but those are option years and he can opt out after this year if he decides to.

Burnett can easily command big money on any team he signs with because of his dominance this season. If he walks out, the Jays will have some possible big name pitchers to pick from that will be free agents. One possible free agent starter is lefty C.C Sabathia, he would command big money but would be a great addition to the staff.

Burnett could opt out though and still entertain offers from the Jays and maybe work on a new deal with good length and money.

If he doesn't return the Jays need to trade or sign somebody, they don't have anyone that can fill his spot on the Jays on their current roster. Despite the Jays having another lackluster year, watching A.J. Burnett pitch and rack up the K's has been very enjoyable.
