Juan Manuel Marquez-Michael Katsidis, Andre Berto-Freddy Hernandez This Saturday
This Saturday, November 27th, will be an amazing triple header night for the fight fans on HBO.
Up first we have the most-avoided featherweight top contender in the sport, Celestino Caballero (34-2, 23 KOs), from Panama City, Panama, moving up in weight to take on Jason Litzau (27-2, 21 KOs) of St. Paul, Minnesota in a 10-round scheduled super featherweight bout.
Caballero is known to as one of the fastest-rising stars in boxing, and can thoroughly outbox his opponents.
Litzau is an all-American kid who is all heart and guts. Jason is known for dominating opponents for the entire fight only to sometimes get knocked out hard in the later rounds, ending with a very inappropriate camera angle shooting up his baggy boxer shorts.
I recall watching Litzau fight on Showtime with a group of my friends and telling them that the last time Litzau was winning the fight he then got knocked out and the camera guy got an angle looking up his shorts as he laid on the mat. Just as I explained that to them, the same exact thing happened all over again.
Up next we have the undefeated welterweight WBC titleholder Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KOs) from Winter Haven, Florida, against top contender Freddy Hernandez (29-1, 20 KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico in a scheduled 12-round, 147-pound contest. This will be Berto's fourth title defense and Hernandez's first title shot.
Berto, the WBC champion for three title defenses already, has still not won over his critics and the media. With a big statement win over a solid opponent like Hernandez he may start to finally gain more acceptance as a top-flight fighter.
Then in the main event, or as my HBO producer buddies call it the "main course," we have the greatest Mexican fighter of our time, Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KOs) of Mexico City, taking on Australia’s Michael Katsidis (27-2, 22 KOs) in what should be an explosive match up and a possible fight of the year candidate.
Marquez, who has the ring IQ of a guru, may be too smart for the younger heavy-handed Katsidis. However, Katsidis knows this is the biggest fight of his life, and he has the thought of his recently deceased brother to fuel him towards a big upset win.
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ VS. MICHAEL KATSIDIS, ANDRE BERTO VS. FREDDY HERNANDEZ AND CELESTINO CABALLERO VS. JASON LITZAU is presented live SATURDAY, NOV. 27 (9:45 p.m. ET/6:45 p.m. PT) from MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, exclusively on HBO.
The HBO Sports team of Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Emanuel Steward will be ringside for all the action, presented in HDTV and in Spanish on HBO Latino.
