Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather: Will the Superfight Finally Happen?

Leo ReyesNov 21, 2010

Right after the Pacquiao-Margarito fight last Saturday, Top Rank owner Bob Arum who acts as Pacquiao's promoter, has started negotiations with at least two of Manny Pacquiao's possible opponents which include Shane Mosley and Andre Berto.

Shane Mosley has said he had a meeting with Bob Arum the other day and announced he is 90 percent sure he will land a fight with the pound-for-pound king.

Unless documents are signed and sealed, there is no assurance Mosley will bag the fight at this time as the selection process is just beginning.

"There is nothing concrete with Mosley because it all depends on what happens with Floyd Mayweather," said Arum.

"All that we need to know from Floyd is who we need to talk to," said Arum. "Whether it's Don King or Al Haymon, we just need a representative for Floyd."

Andre Berto, who had a contract to face Shane Mosley early this year but withdrew days before the fight due to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti where some of his relatives were injured, said Manny Pacquiao has been beating old guys and it is about time he face the younger guys.

The 27-year old Berto who has a two inch height advantage over Pacquiao is undefeated in his 26 professional fights.

Berto is in the undercard of the November 27 fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Michael Katsides at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He will face Freddy Hernandez to defend his WBC welterweight title.

Juan Manuel Marquez is likewise in the running for another crack at Pacquiao but the Mexican idol needs to win over Michael Katsides first to merit Pacquiao's attention.

A good number of online polls show Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still on top of the list of possible opponents of Manny Pacquiao.

However, due to the string of court cases the undefeated boxer is facing in the state of Nevada, he may lose his chance of fighting Pacquiao this year and there is a high probability he  won't be facing Pacquiao at all.

Still, boxing critics say even if Mayweather manages to settle his string of cases in court, he may still continue to duck Pacquiao for fear of losing his "O'. Others say he really is scared of facing Pacquiao in the ring.

Will the super fight finally happen?

The answer is really dependent on the outcome of the court hearing on his cases which will be heard on January 24, the same date his uncle and trainer Roger Mayweather will have his own case heard.

If his legal staff says he can fight notwithstanding the cases pending in courts, then there is a strong possibility the fight which everyone  in the world wants to see, will finally take place next year.

It doesn't mean though the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao will take place in May or June as it could be moved to November while Pacquiao takes on another opponent before he finally takes on Mayweather as his last fight before retiring for good.
