Wrigley Field Football: 20 Ideas For the Next Unique Sports Event

With the recent trend of sports taking place in Unique venues, the speculation at the next unique sporting event/venue combination has begun.

From Illinois against Northwestern in Wrigley field and Army against Notre Dame in Yankee stadium to the NHL Winter Classic every year, sports venues have been trying to find different ways to create buzz.

There are some wild ideas floating around for the next venue for just such an occasion and this countdown is simply going to add fuel to the fire.

What would be the most unique sporting event going forward? Is there another venue that would be just as good? Let us know!

20.World Cup Finals at Cowboys Stadium

Honestly this one isn't that unlikely.

With the US in the running for the World Cup in 2022, Cowboys Stadium is one venue that would make a lot of sense for a championship game.

Imagine 111,000 fans with vuvuzelas. It would be incredible.

19. Cubs and White Sox at Solider Field

2 of 20

A few years ago the Dodgers and the Red Sox played an exhibition at the LA Colosseum, this one makes a ton of sense.

Historic Chicago venue with Chicago's two baseball teams playing there? Sign me up!

It is also in the realm of possible.

18. NFL Game at Soccer City, South Africa

3 of 20

The NFL has made no secrets about their desire to be a more marketable sport over seas.

NFL teams have played in London and Mexico in recent years, but what about playing in South Africa's Soccer City?

The stadium proved to be an incredible venue for the World Cup this past summer. It seems to me that a game there is just a matter of time.

17. World Baseball Classic at Field of Dreams

4 of 20

The World Baseball Classic is bordering on irrelevant.

The only thing that could help the classic make a comeback would be a unique venue.

The Field of Dreams movie site would be a real unique venue.

Set in Iowa, the field that is set in the middle of corn fields would be real fun to watch.

The only thing that would make it better is if the ghosts from the movie emerged from the corn to play against the teams in the classic.

16. NBA Game at Wrigley

First, the NHL had their Winter Classic at Wrigley, now College Football has played a game there. I think the NBA has to be next.

The nice thing is that a basketball court will fit on the stadium floor better than a football field.

Meaning they won't have to play half-court, like Illinois and Northwestern did.

15. New York City Marathon at Madison Square Garden.

6 of 20

Madison Square Garden is considered the most famous arena in the world.

The New York City Marathon is one of the quintessential New York events, what is stopping people from combining the two?

Granted, it would be nearly impossible to run the entire race in MSG, wouldn't it be possible to at least have the finish line in MSG or something like that?

14. NHL Winter Classic on a Frozen Lake

7 of 20

Wasn't Hockey first played on a frozen lake? Wouldn't it make sense to have a Winter Classic on a frozen lake?

Come on NHL, this is a no-brainer.

13. NY Jets Game at JFK Airport

8 of 20

Come on, there is ample room at an airport to lay down a football field.

Plus, it is just too perfect for the Jets to play where Jets belong right?

I mean there are plenty of college teams that play in stadiums that look like airplane hangers, whats wrong with actually playing in an airport hanger, or heck even on the runway?

12. Houston Rockets Game at Cape Canaveral

Just imagine the Rockets playing where Rockets belong, on a launching pad.

That would be one of the coolest visuals in sports, a big movable launching pad with a hardwood rectangle on it.

This goes along with the Jets point; Jets belong at airports and Rockets belong on launching pads.

11. Rally Car Race in San Francisco

10 of 20

This year at the X Games, there was a rally car course that went through downtown Los Angeles. That is cool, but how much cooler would it be over the hills of San Francisco?

It would be like a scene out of an action movie, cars jumping through the air speeding through a metropolitan area.

Why can't we just make this happen? I would pay to watch it.

10. Dodgers and Giants in The Rose Bowl

As I mentioned earlier, the Dodgers and Red Sox played at the Colosseum a few years back in an exhibition game. The only things that would have made it better was is if it had been against the Dodgers long time rival, the Giants and if it had been at the Rose Bowl.

After the Rose Bowl gets it's $152 million face-lift in a few years, it will be a destination venue for many sports.

9. Lakers Game on Santa Monica Pier

12 of 20

Now the Lakers aren't usually the team that needs to have a publicity stunt like this in order to gain interest, but I still think it would be pretty amazing to see a court on the world famous Santa Monica Pier.

I am not sure a court would fit on the pier, but if it did, it would be one of the most amazing venues for a sport in history.

8. Home Run Derby at The Grand Canyon

13 of 20

Just the thought of watching homerun balls sail into the Grand Canyon is reason enough to try to get this to happen.

Seriously it wouldn't be that hard to set up a mound and a home pate 300 feet or so from the edge of the canyon, if the ball is hit into the canyon it is a home run.

My favorite part of this would be hearing Chris Berman's homerun calls. They would be fantastic.

7. MLB All-Star Game in Central Park

14 of 20

The aerial views alone would make this worth it.

Throw in the fact that Central Park is one of the few venues that is already set up to have sporting events and it would work great.

6. Drag Race on Golden Gate Bridge

The only thing you need for a drag race is a long straight flat road. Well isn't that just what the Golden Gate Bridge is?

Granted, if there was an accident, it is likely the car would fall into the bay, but wouldn't the parachute help make the landing a little bit safer?

5. NCAA Basketball Game at Rucker Park

16 of 20

Rucker Park is one of the most famous basketball courts in the world. Countless NBA players have played on this court.

It is time to have a mainstream game here to validate the history.

4. U.S. Open Tennis Match on The Brooklyn Bridge

17 of 20

The Brooklyn Bridge is a historic New York City Landmark. The U.S. Open is a historic New York City sporting event. Why can't we combine them?

Aside from the fact that it has never been done, what is stopping this? There is plenty of room on the bridge to fit a tennis court.

It would also provide quite a bit of publicity for a sport that could always use more publicity.

3. NHL Winter Classic in Southern California

18 of 20

Aside from the problem that would arise with keeping the ice from melting, why wouldn't anyone want the juxtaposition of the Pacific Ocean in the background and a Kings versus Ducks hockey game in the foreground.

Both the Kings and Ducks have decent teams and this would be the best thing for the NHL to do to garner interest in Southern California.

2. NCAA Basketball on an Aircraft Carrier

19 of 20

This one might not be fiction for that much longer.

Michigan State has been researching the idea of playing a game on an docked aircraft carrier for nearly seven years.

"An announcement is forthcoming," MSU athletic director Mark Hollis said in a text message to USA Today a few days ago, adding that's all he can say at this point.

If this becomes a reality, it is going to be a great thing to watch.

1. NFL Game on The Eigthteeth Fairway at Pebble Beach

20 of 20

There isn't a more breathtaking finishing hole in golf than the 18th at Pebble Beach.

Now I really don't know that a football field would fit on this stretch of coarse, but it is worth a shot.

The backdrop of the waves crashing onto the west side of the field would be indescribable.
