Manny Pacquiao: What Separates Him From His Opponents?
Manny Pacquiao brutally defeated Antonio Margarito over the weekend in a 12-round championship fight for the vacant WBC Super Welterweight Belt.
This was the Pacman's eighth championship in eight different weight classes which allowed him to break his own record of seven championships in seven weight classes.
Why is Pacquiao not only the most dominant fighter in the world, but also the most popular? What separates him from the competition?
His Speed
1 of 10
Pacquiao's speed is matched by almost no one in the world. It should be obvious why he is so much faster than his opponents in these upper weight-classes, as he was a former fly weight champion.
He is able to use his speed to throw a crazy amount of punches that would be enough to make anyone stagger.
His Diplomacy
2 of 10
Pacquiao separates himself from the boxing world because he is not your stereotypical meat head boxer who has no brain and only fights.
Pacquiao is a congressman in his home country of the Philippines and this diplomacy is part of what makes him one of the most popular fighters in the world.
People not only want to see the Pacman fight because of his knock-out ability, but because the know outside of the ring he is really a class act.
His Knock Outs
3 of 10
People want to come watch the Pacman fight because of his ability to fight the bigger man and his ability to knock out the bigger man. Pacquiao has knocked out his opponent a total of 38 times out of his 52 wins as a professional boxer.
His ability to just brutalize opponents in a somewhat civilized manner is what makes him what he is today.
His Family
4 of 10
Pacquiao is one of the few boxers in history who the public can trust. The public has no doubt on whether or not Manny is faithful to his wife, because of his sincerity in and outside the ring.
His ability to juggle personal and professional life is bar none and should be emulated by professional athletes across the globe.
His Mental Strength
5 of 10
Pacquiao's ability to out-think his opponent is another thing he uses to his advantage quite often in the ring. Just as in politics, Pacquiao seems to know when to go after the guy with his speed, and when to back off and avoid punches.
This ability is what allows him to be considered one of the greatest boxers of all time and the greatest pound for pound boxer of all time.
His Trainer
6 of 10
Freddie Roach is one of the best trainers in the world. He has been voted trainer of the year four times and continues his success in developing fighters into what they have become.
Roach is training three of the best fighters in the world right now in two different sports. He is the trainer of Manny Pacquiao, but also trains Anderson Silva, and Georges St-Pierre.
His Ability to Close Fights In The Late Rounds
7 of 10
This is what really separates Pacquiao from everyone else right now. He is able to close out a fight in the later rounds and not let his opponent even have a chance at coming back and knocking him out.
His ability to avoid when he needs to and go after it when necessary is something else.
The ninth through 11th rounds of the Margarito fight is a prime example of what I mean by his ability to really close out a fight in the late rounds of a match.
His Poise to Talk Just Enough Trash
8 of 10
Pacquiao himself talks just enough trash in boxing. He doesn't lean so much on trash talking and picking fights with opponent before the fight.
This is one thing that makes him so popular to boxing fans around the globe.
They are able to watch a fighter who is not the cockiest person alive come to a microphone and charm an audience not just rile them up.
His Diplomacy in the Ring
9 of 10
Pacquiao doesn't have to knock out a guy to get the job done. Take for example his fight against Margarito this past weekend.
Margarito was clearly hurt beyond belief during the end of this fight after Manny just leveled his face in with a crazy amount of punches that clearly should have knocked him out.
Pacman could have knocked his opponent out in the 12th round but chose to let him finish the fight because he is a true sportsman. This is why a lot of people like Pacquiao.
With the lack of sportsmanship in professional sports today, it's nice to see someone who cares about their opponent.
His Championships
10 of 10
This is what really separates Pacquiao from everyone else. The number of championships he has held over the years. He has held a title in eight different weight classes which are numbers that can be matched and will not be matched by anyone.
His ability to beat up opponents that are larger than him is just another reason why Pacman is the greatest pound for pound fighter ever.
