Eric StashinNov 15, 2010

The bye weeks are over so we have our first week in quite some time with a full selection of quarterbacks to choose from.  Who is the best option for Week 11?  Let’s take a look at how things currently stand (and remember, we will update these rankings later in the week if necessary):

Thoughts:

  • The weakness in the New England Patriots defense is their secondary (despite the beating Peyton Hillis handed out to them in Week 9).  Even with all the injuries to the Indianapolis Colts receiving corps, it’s impossible to pick anyone other then Peyton Manning to sit atop these rankings for Week 11.
  • Drew Brees has thrown for less then 250 yards just once this season, with 234 yards in Week 1.  He has thrown at least two touchdowns in each of his last five games.  His biggest problem has been the interception, with 10 in his last five games, but Seattle entered Week 10 with just six picks.  The match-up certainly appears to be a favorable one.
  • The Giants passing defense looked awful against Jon Kitna and the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10.  When you also factor in Michael Vick’s ability to run the football, you have to consider him a top five option for the coming week.
  • Mark Sanchez nearly threw for 300 yards for the second consecutive week (299 yards, two TD, one INT) and draws the worst passing defense in the league.  Granted, his success has come in back-to-back overtime games, so if you want to asterisk it, you can, but he’s still a borderline QB1 this week.  The Jets are still a run first offense, which does hurt his potential value somewhat.
  • Carson Palmer continues to get ample opportunities, going 31-42 for 292 yards, two TD and three INT in Week 10 against the Colts.  He gets a Bills defense that had been strong against the pass, but allowed 323 yards to Shaun Hill and the Detroit Lions in Week 10.  Considering how pass oriented the Bengals have been this season, Palmer continues to be a strong play.
  • I have to take Matt Cassel’s big Week 10 performance in perspective, considering how badly they were down.  This is still a run-first attack, but a positive match-up and the hot streak between Cassel and Dwayne Bowe could mean another solid performance.  I’d consider him a strong QB2 this week.
  • Kyle Orton has been unreal this season and he is coming off a monster week, but he draws an extremely tough match-up in Week 11.  The San Diego Chargers are among the best pass defenses in the league, both in terms of yards allowed (185.2) and touchdowns (eight).
  • A healthy Vince Young would be a very good play this week against the Redskins.  Time will tell who ultimately gets the call, but for now I am considering Young a QB2.  He may be moved up during the week, however, depending on the news.
  • The absence of Brett Favre is not a mistake.  He has been wildly inconsistent and is extremely tough to depend on at this point.

What are your thoughts on these rankings? Who's too high? Who's too low?
